I'm working on getting back in to it. I used to play competitively during innistrad and ravnica block. I mainly play modern with some standard. Had a turn 5 win combo elf modern deck that I really liked until it was stolen from me. Sigh.

Unfortunately, I only have one buddy to consistently battle, but we both play budget modern decks. I've got a Bogles and a Tron deck that I use most often, but also several unsuccessful tribal decks (Ooze deck. A fucking ooze deck. C'mon, who the fuck would play an ooze deck?!) that I can't help myself from playing too much. Whatever, thanks for asking about MTG kaptaincarbon. Anyone picking up MM3?

I am looking forward to MM3 dropping the price on fetches and specifically Damnation. As for Budget decks since magic is expensive, I keep trying to get my play group to get into paper pauper (commons only) It can still be wildly competitive with decks only in the 50 dollars range. www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/pauper#onlineI have mono blue delver which is really fun since I love playing faerie tempo

Welcome to the wild and wonderful hobby of MTG. Planeswalkers decks are fantastic way to start! So let me ask you do you have anyone to play with o against as MTG is best wth two people. Ill search around for videos but feel free to ask any sort of silly question even if it is ... "I have no idea where to start, just tell me everything" I played it with my boyfriend and he explained most basics to me. A few friends of me play as well, so we have ideas of small tournaments already. But first, practise! The online game Magic Duels works as well for practise, but I like to play the real version more already. I am also surprised that there is so much lore and stories behind the game, I do love that a lot. Do you play lorebased decks as well, so the cards fit a bit with each other lorewise? Or do you just choose a winning team?

That is the great thing about Magic in my opinion. You can have a flavor based deck and just play a story or you can go with the best cards. I made a Lovecraft EDH deck with all cards based around his stories. My pet EDH deck (oona) is a faery deck and is half and half with cards I love based on faery tribal and good cards that make the game work. Some decks are great for flavor but are hot garbage to actually play. It is sort of like an agreement between the two

I love making decks that have cool art themes but are also playable. It's like music and beer, gotta have good art!

EDH is a really good example of the balance you need to strive for since it is multiplayer and takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Witht hat time frame playing your deck should be fun, not annoying for the rest of the table, but also not a pile of useless cards with all of the art depicting ladies facing left. tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ladies-looking-left/I think at this moment it is cooler to build and share rather than play becasue holy shit some of those cards are bullshit like having Foil (http://static.tappedout.net/mtg-cards-2/duel-decks-elspeth-vs-tezzeret/foil/foil-cropped.jpg) with only 6 islands. Oh my god, I only run Foil in a mono blue deck.

I've taken the unfortunate dive into M:tG recently. It's too consuming, but I'm having a lot of fun. I got my first deck in 1999 (the core set deck), and I must have gotten more cards from two sets in like 2003 but I don't remember every buying those. Nonetheless, I still have all my old cards and have bought maybe 8 boosters so far, along with about 100 white border cards from sets 5-7 on ebay, and I got this dumb red theme deck because it was marked super far down at the store for having a ripped box. My wife got a deck builder toolkit, the white deck of that deck box, and probably the same number of boosters. So far, she's way better than me. My cards kind of suck. This is unfortunate because I like the look of older cards so much more than newer cards, but there's just something things about modern than older cards can't account for so well. I just need more cards in general, most of the decks I've built include putting essentially most of whatever color into it since I don't have much more to choose from.
Currently have a black/green and a blue/white deck so far. I usually take a somewhat aggro approach, but I'm trying to hone in on a more deliberate type of strategy that I like. I really like the interplay of black and green cards so far, seems kind of intimidating. I want to eventually make a colorless/artifact deck since lore-wise I think these are pretty interesting. There's a lot of scarecrow cards I like, would be fun to make a colorless scarecrow deck. I think I like the fantastical/lore/concept aspects of the game more than the gameplay itself, but it's all fun so far. I'm interested in the pauper format, too. Haven't tried that yet.
This has also led me into a hole of researching dead CCGs (Wyvern, Jyhad, Rage, Hecatomb, On the Edge, etc.), a lot of which are super cheap and seem really fun.

TheKeeper, one thing I did, back in ~2010 , and payed off well, (I started MtG back in 4th though in 1994/95) was to actually just buy some full sets of my favorite ones.. I bought (besides the old cards I still kept from way back)full 4th,Ice Age, Fallen Empires, Homelands and Chronicles, maybe another I forget.. And really the value only skyrocketed.. Thus, from spending randomly in older stuff, consider getting a full set.. (The best buys I bought back then was a heavy Played Diamond Valley just for 45$, today no less than 200$, also Ali from Cairo for as much , and 4x Revised Wheel of Fortunes, all four back then for less than ~40, now costing almost ~100 each ) .. I certainly advise really againste any serious money spending/investing in MtG in the current state of affairs, but if you really love the game / grew up with it, and can spare some to get something "full" (even try a recent set) it will worth it in the long term against random spending..).. Also, besides tabletop MtG, there is always MtG Arena for current, and other engines for older MtG (I still play on Manalink with its awesome Microprose UI and enldess thousands of added cards)..

Thus, from spending randomly in older stuff, consider getting a full set.. I would love to do this, and yeah it's probably the best way to get some good and usable cards, but the older stuff I want now is just way over my budget. I've picked up some rare singles from a game shop from series 5-7, but those are the only things I've pinpointed. One thing about T/CCGS that I like is the luck factor of boosters, the excitement of finding great cards that will work just out of chance. I kind of enjoyed the randomness of the 100 card lot I purchased, but something about it wasn't the same as boosters. Maybe buying a full set like that would feel weird, idk. It would definitely be a good investment, though. These things only go up in value. I recently got a 2014 deck builder's toolkit and it's really helped balance my deck, making it much more compatible against newer decks. I've laid off the green/black aggro deck I was working with since I don't have a great plan for that strategy, but I've revitalized a blue/white skies deck I was working on. I think it's pretty decent. I like the combo Azorious cards lore-wise. Lots of drakes, griffons, things like that in my deck now, and the play-style suits me a little more where I can be a little sneakier and trickier instead of just full intimidation. Most of my sorceries, instants, and enchantments are focused on slowing the opponent down and keeping their creatures from attacking, also boosting my own creatures to counter. One thing I do need is some cards that remove enchantments. I think I have like one blue card that does that, but I need more to counter the kinds of cards that arrest my flying creatures.

This is great to read... I haven’t been playing MTG long and I’ve only played on arena but I thought I would go back and try get a full set of fourth edition, I absolutely love the art and they are so cheap to buy. It gives me something to look forward to getting delivered while we are in lockdown and I’ve bought a nice book/folder to put them in.
Since I’ve been looking at all these old cards it got me thinking I’d like to try make a few cheap old school decks that I can play with my partner. I bought the game night set to see if I could get her into playing against me but she found it a little daunting I think.

Nice Jorvvik, 4th is a beloved set both of my time in mid 90s and also as the default set of Microprose's Magic The Gathering game back in around 2000, probably still the best (MtG Arena excluded) adaptation of MtG vs Computer at least. If you have never played it and want to check some oldschool MtG fun be sure to search for its descendant fan maintained (and now unfortunately discontinued) Manalink.. It has *thousands* of classic cards built into Microprose's game. Excellent again , be sure to update us when you receive the set p.s. I had like 6 months to play MtG Arena and I got in last Saturday again and like a drug it dragged me in again

So a little update... I have around 38 more cards to get to complete the set of fourth edition now and I have the two expensive ones out of the way Mana Vault and Sylvan Library. It’s a little annoying as I got a nice ultra pro folder to put them in which has 360 slots and the full set minus basic lands is 363 cards, so I’ve just put the last 3 behind the last card.
The art on these cards is stunning, some of my personal favourites so far are Bad Moon, Oasis and Tranquility.
I’ve also been playing as much Arena as I can and have built a nice mono red aggro deck which I’ve been having a nice win rate with so far.
I’m still yet to play a game with actual cards so I’m really hoping when the lockdown is over and we get back to normal life I can get to the local game store and meet some people to play.

Just a heads up for the MtG ppl, in case you haven't noticed Forgotten Realms has been on since the 8th of July for MtG Arena and on paper at the end of the month.. I already fell for it and preordered a set booster box with the intenet of opening it after 10 years if i have money for leisure, or selling it if I don't ... Yeah, I know :/
