I love My Dying Bride, I'm going to see them in April at Roadburn. Well here is my list: 1. The Cure 2. Wardruna 3. Agalloch 4. Summoning 5. Dead Can Dance 6. David Bowie 7. Wolves in the Throne Room 8. Moonsorrow 9. Black Sabbath 10. Joy Division I wish I could list more than 10 bands, my taste varies a lot and there are a lot of bands that I love a lot. So listing just 10 was a bit difficult, the first 5 are always on the top 5 for years. I really like your list. Can't do a top ten list myself though.

But ask me tomorrow, and it'd probably be different.

Oh my god, not one of you has Mortiis in your top ten?! Yes well Time goes by so slowly And time can do so much In 1996 mortiis would have reached my top 5. But then he did that era 2 and forth. I do understand how many fans enjoy his goth-synth stuff but I do not even like good synth like covenant and vnv-nation so for me I can not list mortiis as a favorite artist since a favorit artist needs to be first and last and always. But if we would make a favorite album of all time I woulld make "crypt of the wizard" somewhere around top 3 even when I a m not asked by fellow dungeoneers.

Yeah. The first album I heard by him was At My Window, one of his 80's albums, and I couldn't understand why he's such a legend. But then I bought this box set that contains all of his early albums, and was just blown away. His music, his lyrics and his vocals are just so impressive and touching on so many levels. Our Mother The Mountain is probably my all-time favourite album by any artist.

I heard Waitin' Around To Die from For The Sake Of The Song on a country/western mixtape a friend of mine made for Christmas. Then I found the rest for myself but these old recordings are some kind of mixture of moreish folk-country and that special ost-music from the spaghetti westerns of the 60's. Rather unique and honest music he got there.

He definitely doesn't fit into the standard country mould at all, most of his music is much closer to the folk revival stuff from the 60's, but I guess that since he was associated with Nashville people filed him under country. That, and "Cowboy" Jack Clement adding his usual over-produced flair to Van Zandts' early stuff. Nothing wrong with country though, I love country music (which is pretty unusual for a 30-something European dude), and I think you can clearly hear a kinship with the lonesome moanin' of Hank Williams in Van Zandt. Van Zandt was just more poetic and sophisticated in his lyrics.
EDIT: interesting aside, and sort of relevant here I reckon, Townes Van Zandt also recorded what is probably one of the earliest Tolkien-themed tracks, and certainly one of the only in country music, a track called Silver Ships Of Andilar.
