RE: OG E-Mu Proteus modules (1/2/3). I think you can layer sounds but can they play separate parts simultaneously? Like, can I assign one voice to MIDI channel 1 and a second to channel 2, sorta like a Sound Canvas? Or does it just perform one part at a time?

We have a Proteus 1 and yes you can assign a different sound to each MIDI channel

My favourite synths are from Korg N-series, especially N364 or N1r. The N364 is on so many 90's and early 2000's european metal albums. Nightwish, Moonsorrow and Finntroll still use it, and strings on Dimmu Borgirs Mourning Palace are straight from a preset sound on it. N1r is a newer rack mounted version of it with all the same samples and some extra. I like doubling some melody lines and leads with analog monophonic synths. Behringer Neutron is nice as it's quite affordable for a full analog synth and it has it's own sound. Also, it is fully eurorack-compatible, which can be considered as a downside as it's a path to financial ruin.
