cryptzzz man I *still* remember that big "fields" level , I think it maybe was near wear I drop it, I was stuck not knowing how to proceed or maybe a bug didn't let a game trigger happen, who knows.. But I was really sorry for dropping it, I so loved its atmosphere.. My memory also is stuck I think before the fields in some dark underground tunnels or what being fighting or chased by a skeleton... Excellent stuff, classy atmosphere.. Happy to see that it's still loved by many other people who played it!! I don't remember the soundtrack but as per your suggestion I'll check it out on youtube and let probably more memories roll!! Speaking of atmospheric games/horror games, the games I got to finish in horror genre were mostly adventures if memory serves me well but I loved each and every one of them and atmospheres were huge in the following more oldies : - Darkseed (with H.R.Giger's cult alien horror supreme art, "small game" but SICK in a great way atmosphere, but hard gameplay with many deaths if you don't know what to do but it's finishable really even without hints with just some trial error, definitely deserves to get a chance) - Alone in the Dark 1 : Now this is another CULT classic but its revolutionary graphics look very dated today, still a pioneer in multiple genres (3d action adventure, survival horror) but an ADVENTURE at heart (unlike its descendants like Resident Evil etc which took their own path)... A cult game I recommend everyone to enjoy if you can get used/tolerate the graphics, it has GREAT soundtrack also!! And has many many classic moments in it, like a library where you could find legendary (nonexistent) books of horror literature, like De Vermiis Mysteries , Necronomicon (if you read it you get an instadeath!! )!! A beloved game I think for many people and totally cult!! - Gabriel Knight 1 : Another cult cult golden Sierra game, huge hit back then and huge following, it was pure adventure and had such a THICK and DENSE New Orleans voodoo atmosphere like anything you could have imagined!! Great game and only minor point it had in the endgame a mazelike sequence that could get VERY frustating but still one of the best of the best !! @daytol Indeed snes definitely had more JRPGs but I thouht Mega Drive/Genesis got its share too, I surely miscounted as I'm not an expert on the 16-bits as I didn;t have one back in the day BUT slowly working on it (for years ) through emulation and a nice mini Snes I got few years back.. GREAT GREAT era for both computers and consoles, I think my preferred era in general (1989-95/6).. Console wars among Nintendo vs Sega while and computer wars (Amiga Vs Atari St vs PC - I was on the PC side since my first 286 ) Golden era.. As for the app store, my half-working ipad2 maybe could be supported but still the controls of the otherwise great thing that any table is aren't very meant for my hands.. I can't play on a tablet at all 2D action games barring some shoot em ups like Gradius or completely other genres that shine with touch controls (puzzles etc etc..).. But no harm done as I emulate and play through good old Xbox and its Duke controllers so I'll check the recommendations engraven no mate, first time I learn of it, very many many thanx for the recommendation, I'll definitely look around for it and enjoy either the game if it's playable on modern systems or emulated or a youtube video at worst case nice!! Alone in the Dark 1 is one of my favorites, one of the few games I replay with any regularity (or play at all with any regularity, anymore). It's a pretty brisk playthrough once you know everything already, so it makes for a nice way to spend a couple late night hours. I used samples from the narrator's reading of the various books on every track on my album Nameless and Formless -- so that tells you how much I like it, haha. Of course, there is a means by which to safely read from De Vermis Mysteriis ...

- - I was on the PC side since my first 286 ) Golden era.. I've been on the PC side ever since as well! The first computer in our house was an IBM AT 286 with a good ol' CGA monitor. The games it had were Alley Cat, Shamus, Digger, Sopwith, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Arkanoid, Karateka, Paratrooper, Space Quest 1, Larry 1, Flightmare, Stargate, Chessmaster 2000, Grand Prix Circuit, GATO, some Asteroids clone and an unknown pinball game with very minimal & modest graphics and which ran only from a boot disk. Those were the times. \o/ Alone in the Dark 1 - a true classic indeed and gave me shivers every time I played it back in the day!

crystallogic13 Gabriel Knight and Alone in the Dark sound interesting. Might check them out in the future, when I will have too much time on my hands (if that will ever be the case;)). Never got a chance to play them, not to mention upon their release as they are older than me... When it comes to adventure games with thick atmosphere I really like Sanitarium, have you played it? A bit newer game but still very fond memories and dark atmosphere - Fahrenheit. Not a perfect game by any means but very memorable. From even newer titles I must mention the amazing Cry of Fear with it's amazing soundtrack, atmosphere of depression, solitude, hopelessness. Might sound weird, but I was thinking about it lately and CoF is definitely in my top 10 games that had most impact on me. So good... In a way, it's closely related to the Silent Hill series. Modern classic I call it

engraven my memory certainly doesn't serve me well but let me remind of good memories : I think if you read Necronomicon you died no matter what ? De Vermiis was the one you stepped on the pentagram to read? Been many many years but I loved it, I even wrote my own solution/walkthrough talvisynth yeah mate, same here, my first PC after a 2600 ripoff which couldn't satisfy me ofc, was also a 286 /16mhz with also CGA and mono monitor, no hdd and only 5.1/4 drive.. Upon purchase I was given by the store a pirated copy of Dos 3.x with 5 tiny games that fitted in the double density (only 360kb) disk : pacman (a pretty bad version), chess (very barebones but still ok), qbert (on cga it looked and played worse than probably other version), digger (very enjoyable for what its worth) and an already "trained" (endless lives) version of Arkanoid, which was MY FAVORITE from these all and for a good time till I started getting more copies of games from cousins etc... Those were the days mate, I see on your mentions many great games, Sierra ones too, but the one I also spent COUNTLESS and i mean countless hours its "effects" from the beeper still with me is Grand Prix Circuit, by Accolade... Dude, driving that McLaren felt so real in CGA fashion back at the day haha For real though a great great game which is still as playable as then no matter how spoiled we are today with graphics... I even remember the high score names of opponent drivers like "Tony Bornilli" or something like that Great memories cryptzzz If you have tolerance for old UI of games and kinda dated graphics you should go for Alone in the Dark 1, it's a great game beside the "dating" of it, if you can cope.. But you must in any case at least check out Gabriel Knight 1, this is even today very relevant, it got an HD version people were'n't happy about but the original version is perfectly playable and I 100 recommend if you give it a try, it's not a very long game too so you can finish it in a reasonable time!! Totally recommended!! As for Sanitarium, I have it original (box) from way then and never got the chance to play it (as with many others..)... I always have it on my "to play at an appropriate time" list.. Fahrenheit on the other hand was also available for Xbox and when I rented to copy it (you needed to ftp the contents from the xbox to pc, patch .xbe and then create an iso to "burn" and a modded xbox ofc), I remember it had difficulties either with its User Interface or with the game (maybe it was more real time? don't remember)... I always have it available nowdays on xbox so I might give it a chance at any time

@daytol Indeed snes definitely had more JRPGs but I thouht Mega Drive/Genesis got its share too, I think comparatively speaking it didn't get as many as the SNES did. Could be wrong though. GREAT GREAT era for both computers and consoles, Yeah, the Genesis is my second most favorite console ever, so that was a pretty good time for me too Lotta good stuff from there. as I emulate and play through good old Xbox and its Duke controllers so I'll check the recommendations Let us know on here how that goes!

talvisynth ohhh that oldschool CGA pallette graphics, feels like in heaven.. If you by any chance have interest in pinballs there have been several emulators throughout the years, for full machines ++ ... Pinball is always a good choice for some mindless high score fun in any era Unrelated but after having ordered that C64 mini and not seeing any movement from vendor, I figured it will never be fulfilled so I bit (even more..) and ordered, yes, you guessed it, Amiga 500 mini, for 130 euros, definitely not cheap but well worth the price.. Currently having it at factory settings etc but it supports usb stick with whdload images n stuff so I'm hopefull it will be a good buy as soon as I have some time to enjoy it!!

Pinball is always a good choice for some mindless high score fun in any era I was never particularly good at pinball games, though I still used to like them a lot. My absolute favorite was Epic Pinball, had even the registered version of it with all tables. And the fantastic tracker music in that game, holy diddly! Fun times those were indeed!

Fallout 2 For me it doesn't get any better than that. Damn, for how many years I've been waiting (since FO1..) to play the whole series at least up to modern New Vegas.. And especially the first two which are more than cult.. I know though that at least the first one punishes the player for taking too long (which is good and realistic, fitting the gritty game) which is the only thing that keeps me from firing it up until I have "more time" .. Excellent choice.. More than cult sums it up nicely!

It has been ages since I last posted here, so there has been quite a lot I have been playing. The Highlights of which have been: -
Unreal World (PC) - I picked it up on Steam aaaages back but the complexity and enormity of it put me off playing for a long time however once I got stuck in I was very impressed and have since sunk a couple of hundred hours and still feel like I am only scratching the surface. Very compelling indeed
Norco (PC) - Great story telling with wonderful pixel art. A Very rewarding experience
Warhammer: Mechanicus (Switch) - Really really fun turn based strategy which works surprisingly well on a console.
Also recently started Alien Isolation on the Switch

Watched this great GREAT video and was amazed about the Doom mod it reviews, inspired by House of Leaves (haven't read it but very popular)... The mod is really a work of art and thankfully the reviewer here did an awesome job too (didn't know this sub -thanx youtube algorithm- but perfect work!) Totally recommended to watch, trust me, you gonna start to watch just a piece of theis 1h42m piece, BUT YOU GONNA GO FULL TO THE END, trust me on this, so be prepared

angbandslasthero glad you enjoyed it, I was so hooked too I saw it an a single sitting While I remember from back in the days the wads, back then endless craze of creativeness, I haven't kept up with current oldschool Doom stuff, besides appreciating modern engines like gzdoom I think and big releases like Brutal Doom, but I am glad that the community seems to be as strong as ever... Recently I'm still on my emulators mostly big trip, I realized that besides the already known TREASURES like Exodos projects, C64, Operation Flashpoint etc, I also realized that the great old xbox's CoinOps and other similar frontends have been going strong for years with pc releases already set up n stuff, either PC CoinOps versions, or other stuff like Core , there's loads of treasures to get and have some quality of life enjoying these systems with minimal setup.. So I've been through a lot of emulation stuff, a little bit enjoying my classic favorite titles, a little bit exploring stuff but also just sometimes putting many things in my room simultaneously on my pcs/laptops/tv so I feel like an arcade shop back in the day, with beloved attract modes of either front-ends or games!! As for the first game I think I enjoyed last weekend, after many many years I remembered to search for that "bike" game I remembered and never got to find, so "Radical Bikers" was and while not so serious less enjoyable than Crazy Taxi of the same era, it is a fun game to have some mindless fun Lots of gaming though but nothing dedicated lately really, I guess I enjoy more jumping game to game and relaxing than committing to one at this time..

talvisynth man og System Shock + 2 are both on my to play list forever , feel especially bad about it... I was looking forward to this remake but I think either this or another maybe cancelled(?) remake that had some issues - a kickstarted one-, kinda completely halted my interest in it.. Hope they done the service the game deserves and hopefully gonna check out this modern version.... On another news Diablo 4 is coming and it's the first Diablo I'm not very excited about, but nothing with the game itself, I just kinda feel completely full of Action RPGs and dunno if D4 besides great cinematics as expected is going to bring anything worth the price tag and time sunk that is significant better or different than the many action RPGs that are around.. And on a last not, MY FUCKIN a500 mini, a 130 euros piece of cheap shit got bricked on without warning... On the internet only a single post had the issue and got a replacement, I will of course check all my options but I'm completely enraged with the company behind c64mini/a500mini for using THE CHEAPEST shit they could get on all levels.. Nothing again from them, and while the 45 price tag of C64mini is expected for some low quality stuff (btw c64 mini has THE WORST and I MEAN THE WORST controller ever, imagine a worse cheaper slower original atari 2600 but WORSE - it even made people think lag was from pal/ntsc but it was from the DAMN controller - aaaagh!-- fucking corporations and monkey corporate suits..), but the amiga mini price of 130 and getting THIS cheap stuff is outrageous..
