Anyone here play Cave Evil? Fun? It's been on my to-buy list for quite a while. Darn low Canadian $ and high shipping rates have kept it from me to this point. Seems like something that folks here might be into. store.cave-evil.com/Considering they also have the Abandoned Places discography for sale I'd say it's a good fit.

Intrigued for sure - I guess when I ordered the AP discography and checked their site out, I assumed that since the original Cave Evil was sold out that it wasn't worth my looking at that section. But it seems like the Warcults thing is a standalone game, which is cool.

I fell in love with it when I saw the trailer for the game, but I haven't had the spare funds to find a copy or get Warcults. The whole theme of the game just screams dark dungeons to me (pretty literally). Also, they've put out some music to go along with the game that is astoundingly eerie. Super, super cool stuff. Was considering posting this compilation in the Dungeon Noise thread because it certainly has its noisy bits, but I think it fits here first. Real scary trippy dungeon stuff, like a mushroom trip in abandoned tunnels with swords and magic books of occult power. Anyway, check it out: CAVE EVIL RADIO MIX

One of the artists responsible for the work is Mat Brinkman. That's what originally drew me to the game when it was first being released. Wish I had grabbed a copy at the time. :-P

Yes!! Mat Brinkman's art brings the game to life. It's that right mix of disturbing realism, slightly surreal settings, old school death metal art, and just straight dark stuff that hooked me too. I want to try finding some of his zines and comics in this style.

...I want to try finding some of his zines and comics in this style. I was lucky enough to be able to pick several up at the time of publishing.. I think I have 5 books, a large poster, and 2 T-Shirts. The Le Dernier Cri books are prized possessions I have to say. Monsters being my favourite.

I do indeed play Cave Evil and have lost count of the number of games under my belt. It is a lot of fun, but one needs to accept the game's chaotic, unpredictable nature (and messily writen rulebook!) in order to get the most out of it. This means, in practice that a new player might have a game in which nothing happens or they feel powerless, but this is balanced out in my opinion by the games when shit gets real all of a sudden and the game is won or lost due to some insane craziness or risky play. For that matter I don't really view it as a game to play especially competitively, more of an exercise in mind-shattering necro-story telling.
The core of the rules themselves, once you get through the aforementioned rulebook, are quite simple if you have any experience with gaming or roleplaying games - the complexity comes from the way all of the elements (creatures, spells, random events, items, wandering monsters, guardians) interact. You may find yourself getting quite attached to your tooled up little squads ov evil.
I have played one game of the Warcults expansion/standalone game and the systems is quite similar but 'zoomed out'. I have to say this was not as enjoyable as CE for me, but I am careful to bear in mind the aforementioned unpredictabilty and have not judged th game on a single playthrough. For those having no luck in finding an affordable copy of Cave Evil, you might have a bit more luck with Warcults as I believe it's still viable through the Emperors of Eternal Evil online store.
There is also an online module for Cave Evil available through online boardgaming client Vassal, so if you are comfortable with doing that it is possible to play online - the Cave Evil rules are (legitimately available) online and since the publisher has announced they will never reprint, I think those curious are within their rights to give it a go.
