Someone said it on the facebook page. I dont remember who it was exactly, but I remember they were pretty reputable, so they were probably just messing around and I didn't realize it lol.

Listened to Die Festung again today and it's still in my eyes the crowning achievement of winter synth, just so good. I think Die Festung might have started WS proper, a black metal-derived focus on winter synth ambience. It also came out in 1998, so its definitely the precursor to WS today. Agree - although to me what is almost as striking is how different Einsamkeit - feels much more Berlin School to me in some very significant ways.

Too bad this tape only had seven copies. It's a pretty good winter synth EP. Whole tape is pretty ominous sounding, like a trek through a blinding mysterious snowscape. I slso like the bizarre character titles, adds to the mystique and sets it outside of understandable references and commonalities. Hope they do a re-issue of this soon as they are with Kobold. ᐊᐳᑦ - ᐸᓇ

Listening to this now, very hypnotic and contemplative. Great stuff.

winedrinkers.bandcamp.com/album/warmthI released this demo a few days ago, I'd very much classify it as winter synth. Inspired by Monastery - Peculiar Storms, and also by the winter here in my country.

Grok - An Aeon of AscensionNot strictly winter synth, it's described as "soaring, crystalline synth textures and ambient movements." An ambient version of a previous metal album, interesting concept.

Seeing a lot of love for "Die Festung" and it is a great release, but no love for "Einsamkeit" from Paysage d'Hiver? "Einkehr" off of that album is probably my favorite example of winter synth:
