Just purchased the new Svardun tape from Canto CrΓptico. Very nice, classic WS sounds.
My vague theory about Winter Synth, now, is that it often seems to not have a very powerful low-end in the mix, so that it has a more ethereal, falling-from-above quality. I think this is one way WS can be easily distinguished from DS.

Been a fan of Paysage d'Hiver and Darkspace since like 2011 I want to say, and have heard of winter synth I think since 2015. I think I'm only just now really getting into it. Thanks for initiating this thread thekeeper. Hopefully this thread won't die off so soon. I may try my own stab at winter synth, but I would probably just end up as 'winter drone.' Has there been literature released evoked by winter synth? I think it would be cool to see someone write either a fiction story or a mystical grimoire inspired by an album in this style.

That's why I am now using very little Korg M1 with my project Il Generale Inverno (new album out on Christmas Night in cassette and digital!) and switching to other kind of synths.

Yes! I need this in my life.
so question, what gear would you suggest for a winter synth sound? Is there a certain synth that guarantees the frigid, bleak tone? Is it more about effect pedals? Or can everything be done well on a DAW?

I suspect the answer is the same as for everything synth...some people say analog is the only way, lots say hardsynths are fine but softsynths just don't cut it, and then people like me (who can't really afford either) point out that software gives you much more variety, and that really if you're recording direct input as opposed to micing the synth externally, you're not gonna notice as much difference as you say you do...

Or can everything be done well on a DAW? I have definitely heard winter synth that Iβm sure was created with vSTs. Elements you often hear with winter synth are synth strings, bells, synth pads with envelopes or filters for a βswelling β sound, and often field recordings. There are lots of ways to vary this formula but I think often winter synth is more repetitive than DS as well. With the last two releases from Black Epheria I aimed toward Winter Synth. Would be interested to hear your feedback. blackepheria.bandcamp.com/album/long-play-iiblackepheria.bandcamp.com/album/demo-iii

You cannot get the analog experience with digital synths as much as you cannot get the digital privileges with analog gear. I love them both and I use them both a lot. All kinds of synths have their uses. You can do winter synth on any kind of gear for sure. You're most likely going to drown everything in processing and/or effects so you can get away with almost anything. Anything you like, just go out there and try EVERYTHING you can get your hands on. I like to combine grainy and distorted analog bass sounds with complex and chimy rompler and FM patches. I've tried making digital stuff sound like analog and it'll never be the same. But I'm not an excellent player so I must admit I enjoy the convenience of editing midi stuff.
My advice is to go around downloading everything you can find and try them out and not to hurry with getting tracks done in the beginning. Just find a cluster of sounds you really like and then go from there. It's fun mucking around with that stuff. Dexed is a great FM software if you want that kind of stuff and you can find tons of free VSTi synths. If you want to lay down some cash, the aforementioned Korg M1 is very popular around here. I too have it and use it a lot but I do not believe it's anything incredible. It's very good but I personally do not like the interface. It's very cumbersome and slow. Also there are way too many sounds and patches. I've had to dig down the rabbit hole and write notes on what patches I want to use in the future. But I think we have a thread about this stuff around here somewhere so maybe it's best to continue this discussion over there if needed.

My university semester just resumed so I'm gonna need to figure out how to dedicate time to work on making a ds/ws project.
I like the tone of the long play album but wasn't a big fan of the crackling in the demo. I love the tape recorded approach though. I'll go to the gear thread and comment about an idea I have.

emerge, somehow I've never gotten into Vinterriket. Not sure why, I've seen it cited as some of the best winter synth/bm. Any suggested albums?

I never really realised how important "Oxygene" by Jean Michelle Jarre was for the genre until today. Historically, I wonder if Winter's "Blackwhole" outro from "Eternal Frost" had anything to do with it - it's totally like winter synth, but harsher, not our every-year winter with snowflakes and shit, but rather the type that makes bird fall from the sky frozen and suffocated with smog.
