I like the idea of using hardware (keyboards & hardware sound modules) for creating unique sounds, as typically you will be recording the actual audio (rather than MIDI data) generated by the keyboard its self...and this forces you to fully perform parts and stick with a particular sound. With MIDI and VSTs you have the flexibility to quantise, edit notes and sound patches etc., which can be good in many ways, but can reduce the curiousness and distinctiveness that makes this genre music appealing. I'm certainly guilty of 'drawing notes' to try to perfect playing, and spending too long flicking though VST patches to find an instrument to assign to a recorded part (which always ends up being a harpsichord anyway!) I think I'll try some more direct keyboard recording, or at least use soundfonts of some classic keyboards. I've increasingly felt this way when composing. I've been trying to limit myself more VST-wise since the breadth of possibilities is just too vast. Picking instruments is probably my least favorite part of the whole process.

since I started this series of clips, I have recently added something about VST effects (like reverbs etc). Just follow this link and let me know if you find my slideshows helpful: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXdSciYJJjk&t=4s...next chapter could be about mixing...

That synth might sound awful on its own, but if you run it through an effects chain, I'm sure you can get get some great sounds out of it. You're not limited to chiptune music with a synth like that. You can use various techniques, hardware, and software to make that thing sound great in a recording.

My friend Xavier and I recently spent an afternoon in the countryside with a few instruments (synths, flutes, cithar...) and a portable recorder. We hadn't played music together since 2003-2004, maybe... We're thinking about resurrecting Maelifell.

Wait a bit before saying that. If we release a disco/funk album maybe you'll think otherwise.
It's not the greatest probability, I admit.
