Discuss, compare, etc.
I've been playing a lot of different stuff lately on my Retropie and kind of thinking about the breadth of home game consoles over the years so I thought it might be fun to rank them. I didn't take build quality into too much consideration, it's mostly weighing quantity of games with quality of games and how they run on the system. I only did systems that spanned at least into the 90s if they began in the 80s and I didn't include computer consoles since most of the good stuff for those is Japanese only (also didn't include Windows, c64, etc). Only considered the US and PAL releases, otherwise some systems would probably be higher (NEC systems). Didn't include the numbered Atari systems since they're like on their own game plane anyway. So, here's my ranking:
1.) PSX 2.) SNES 3.) NES 4.) Dreamcast 5.) PS2 6.) GBA 7.) Saturn 8.) N64 9.) Genesis/Megadrive 10.) Nintendo DS 11.) GBC 12.) Gamecube 13.) PS3 14.) Wii 15.) Neo Geo+CD 16.) Gameboy 17.) 3DS 18.) PS4 19.) Turbografx-16+CD 20.) Neogeo Pocket Color 21.) Sega CD 22.) Game Gear 23.) PSP 24.) Sega Master System 25.) 3DO 26.) PS Vita 27.) Xbox 28.) Xbox 360 29.) Atari Jaguar+CD 30.) Sega 32x 30.) Wii U 32.) Atari Lynx 33.) Xbox One
A few of these decisions were pretty hard to make. I ultimately put Dreamcast above PS2 because the DC has an extremely strong library and was more consistent than the PS2. Of course PS2 has great games, but DC I think is a better system overall. SNES and NES are kind of tied for me, but SNES beat out NES just by a hair since it has better RPGs (though NES has DQ4). Saturn was tough. It's library is pretty solid and it looks fantastic, especially the 2d stuff, but I think the number of similar quality games for GBA and PS2 put Saturn lower. If I included Japanese titles, Saturn might be higher. I think N64 is pretty overrated but some games really save it. DS and GBC were tough. GBS has more memorable titles but DS has a better library and a lot of hidden gems that bump it up over GBC. 3DS and PS4 are kind of on par, but I think 3DS has more replayability and better exclusives. Neo Geo Pocket Color would be much higher if it had more games; everything that it does have it good, which is rare for something to accomplish, but it just needs more. Sega CD I ranked separately since I feel like people treat it as a whole separate console even though it's an add-on. Some really great games but quite a few misses. Game Gear would've been better if the actual handheld wasn't so awkward and had better battery life. Might be higher if I included Japanese titles. PSP is kind of a one-trick system. Fantastic RPGs and a few good platformers, but that's really it for me. I'd rather play everything above it. Master System was greatly overshadowed be Genesis. Didn't have enough games that gave it identity. 3DO is an underrated system and most of its ports are really good, but it has a lot of bad titles and not enough good exclusives. Japanese games would help it here. PS Vita is like the PSP but they realized their market, except the games aren't as good. Xbox has like 17 good games. Atari Jaguar gets a lot of flak, but its not that bad, its just that there is a lot that's way better. 32x had a few great games but it was ultimately a waste, had to rank it separately to be fair to the Genesis and Sega CD. Wii U was a total failure, only a handful of good titles. Lynx had a bad library and should've been better, almost went above Wii U for its innovations for handhelds but Wii U had a better library. Xbox One has no redeemable exclusive titles and anything good on it is also on PS4 or PC. They should have called it quits after 360. I feel that the Switch is too new to rank.
Favorite system? Favorite handheld?

I've always been a pc gamer first and foremost. I had a Genesis, Xbox, and Gamecube, but don't really have any stand-out memories with those. N64 however is the pinnacle of consoles for me by a huge extent. There's something about the graphic and sound limitations that are pure magic for me.

N64 however is the pinnacle of consoles for me by a huge extent. There's something about the graphic and sound limitations that are pure magic for me. I think I'm probably half and half. I played a variety of things growing up, but PSX, GBC, N64, and PC hold the most nostalgia for me. There's something about 3d graphics that just weren't quite there yet during that era that made things even more immersive and mystical, I definitely felt that as well. PSX, Dreamcast, N64, Saturn and early to late 90s PC games all have that odd 3d feel. I have very little interest in most modern PC games aside from indie weirdo stuff now, but PS4 isn't doing too bad so far in the console realm. I have a needlessly large game library on GOG, most of which I'll probably never end up completing. What are your favorite N64 games? Banjo Kazooie and Harvest Moon 64 are two of my all time favorites in general. Kirby 64 and Paper Mario are two other favorites for the console itself but not in my general top 10 across everything. Miraculously, I've never played Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. I've wanted it for most of my life but I just haven't bought it. It apparently emulates pretty flawlessly. I remember watching my friend play it and the chainsaw hedge maze chase was nerve wracking.

I'm also a PC dedicated from back at the day, but I always enjoyed gaming in all its forms, arcades, systems I had and of course blessed emulation. Sooo, putting PC asided which is an endless format if you start from the DOS days, the rest (only stuff I own): 1) Xbox (the original). Ok this is the most modded hacked and full of transfered PC stuff and essentially a mini PC on TV if you put in all the emulators inside. It has great games too (DoA3,Rallisport Challenge, Shenmue 2, Soul Caliber, Voodoo Vince, Oddworld etc etc) and with it you get a massive libreary of all consoles via emulation up to PSX(though N64 and PSX are not that very well , there are finishable stuff 2) Nintendo DS : It has its own massive library with a lot of exclusives, Castlevanias, Metroids, Marios, you name it and also emulation too via a flashcard etc etc.. Endless stuff for mobile and quality of course. 3) Playstation 2 : When I bought it I thought it didn't have as massive library as PS1 but time passed and I think PS2 has more exclusive, unique and unknown stuff (and many many RPGs) than any other console. It's greatly emulated today on PC and since it doesnt have a HDD like xbox today its kinda tiring to bother with CDs on the original but still what a huge great library of games... And of course it was home to the stories GTA games, Vice City Stories which is GREEEEEAT and LCS.. 4) Xbox 360 (Jtag) : Well yes if you have a modded one and plug a hdd full of some mostly PC but its own too like the Rockstar's gta like western and other stuff you have a big library to spend more than one person's free time. 5) Mini SNES : It's official, it's great, it's mini, comes with 2 controllers and 21 classic games, it can be flashed/loaded with extra roms easily like 1,2,3 and its damn worth the 100 shell out. 6) Atari 2600 : Well it was great on it's time , I still enjoy Alice's Abenteur and other classic games but the stiffness of it's joysticks brings me nightmares. HUGE of course for its time, my opinion is irrelevant of this great classic. Besides them I play most others on emulation on PC or xbox, depending on the system. I maybe come back with more on other systems I didn't own as posts flow

What are your favorite N64 games? Banjo Kazooie and Harvest Moon 64 are two of my all time favorites in general. I loved Harvest Moon. Banjo Kazooie was great, but I never got very far and wouldn't say it was a favorite. My favorites are pretty typical, Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. To this day Mario Kart 64 is my go-to game when hanging out with friends, also Road Rash and Showtime (midway arcade basketball game). I loved Goldeneye back in the day but it aged really poorly.

Anyone have a Switch? People are still going crazy over it but it honestly doesn't seem that great, at least library-wise. Not enough exclusives yet, not enough new titles, too many cross-platform releases that were already out.

I have a Switch and honestly I feel like it's slowly becoming the best thing since the Gamecube. Great Switch exclusives to own right now: Zelda Breath of the Wild Zelda Link's Awakening Luigi's Mansion 3 Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (This was a surprise. If you like the jrpg tactics genre, you will love this) Splatoon 2 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (I'm ~1000 hours into this one. I play it competitively) Super Mario Maker 2 Super Mario Odyssey Other Stuff I've been playing on the Switch: Capcom Belt Action collection (collection of old beat 'em ups, arcade ports) Fire Emblem: Three Houses (I'm not a big fan of this one but many love it) Kirby: Star Allies (too easy and short, it's a shame. It's a kid's game, really) Octopath Traveler (This was surprisingly good. The stories are extremely meh but the combat system is fresh and interesting, great game) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Pokémon Let's go Rayman Legends definitive edition Sonic Mania Plus Super Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection (Mostly super turbo with friends) Unravel two (fun with a friend) Trine: Ultimate collection (Super fun with 2 pals) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (a better version of the amazing Wii U game) Axiom Verge PSX Final Fantasy ports (Just finished FFVII and it had a god damned 3x speed mode, love it! This is how you do a remake) New Pokemon game just for the heck of it What I want to get: Astral Chain Yoshi's Crafted World Dead Cells Dragon Quest XI (The Switch version has the whole game remade in 2D SNES style, is that amazing or what?) And like 15 or so indie games. Upcoming stuff I'm waiting for: Animal Crossing Langrisser I & II remakes (Holy whit the original Langrisser I / Warsong on the genesis is one of my all time favorite games) Metroid Prime 4 Trials of Mana remake (Seiken Densetu III, this never came out outside japan) Zelda Breath of the Wild sequel New Metroid game I'm probably forgetting multiple things but I think I got the most important ones. The thing about the Switch is that it's the first time ever that Nintendo has abandoned the idea of a closed eco-system and has pretty much everyone on board. We're getting loads of multi-platform games, better versions of modern games, craploads of retro love on multiple platforms (even straight up arcade ports), great offering in the indie department. There aren't THAT many amazing exclusives yet but the ones that have come out have been mostly top notch and it does not seem like it's stopping. I'm confident the exclusive library will be pretty damn solid in two years or so. I got it for the exclusives but now it's more like when I see any game that looks cool I'm instantly thinking "is this on the Switch? I want it on the Switch." I love the portability of it and the possibility to play hand-held. This has gotten me to play many cross-platform games I haven't played before since I much prefer playing on the Switch than anything else. The Switch Pro Controller is also the best controller ever made ergonomically speaking. The Dpad is too sensitive and gives misinputs, I hate that. I know a fix and I'm gonna try it out. Other than that, amazing. What I don't like is that you have to buy it separately and the joycon controllers are crap for any kind of serious gaming. The are very good for Mario Odyssey but yeah.. So ranking consoles. Here's my top 10: 1. NES 2. Genesis/Mega Drive 3. SNES 4. Gamecube 5. PSX .. I changed my mind. I can only name the top 5. It gets too hard after this.

I'm interested in the Switch, but I feel like it's been out too long to still have such a small library, most of which is ports and remakes. There's a lot of non-exclusives on it that I'd rather have on the PS4. I'm kind of surprised the system is doing so well considering this since I've heard a lot of criticism about the console differences and the Switch version's are usually the lower ranking of the 3 (ps4, xb1, switch, maybe pc); that, and the joystick dragging thing sounds quite annoying. All this said, it does seem like a pretty kool console, and at some point in the future I'll get a Switch Lite, but probably not for a few years. The exclusives for the system seem really good. I feel that's one of nintendo's strong points. It's odd to see the video game industry mirroring the hollywood film industry in regard to reboots/remakes etc. Must be a societal thing we're going through in terms of who has money and who has nostalgia. Some have been pretty kool though. I really liked the Secret of Mana remake, and the Shenmue rereleases were pretty good, even though I played them on like pure DC graphic settings (it's virtually the same as the original this way). The Link's Awakening remake looked pretty kool. I don't know why so many people were hating on the graphics, I think they make sense as a more realized GB kind of aesthetic. Reminds me of Paper Mario a bit, actually.
That's pretty awesome that DQXI on the switch has a 2D mode. It's such a long game though, would be tough to put in another 80 hours, haha.

I've put in 60 hours already and people have told me I'm merely halfway the game (and this excludes the 2D mode and extra content). Not complaining though! Have been in love with it since day one. Really appreciate the Japanese narration and orchestral soundtrack that isn't found on the PS4.
The Switch has probably been my best gaming purchase ever. It's ported some of my favorite games (Grim Fandango, Night in the Woods) and hosts some of my favorite popular franchises (Zelda, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy). Its portability is a real joy, even though I prefer to play in docked mode for extra engagement.
I did have the drifting joystick problem but after sending it to a repair station, Nintendo made sure I had a new one in only 3 days, free of charge.

I was raised in front of a CPC.
I would never have made Dungeon synth if I hadn't played games like Iron Lord
We also had great medieval RPG in France, like "Fer & Flamme" (Iron & Flame)

After 2017 I have added an Xbox One (which I use mostly for Forza Horizon 4 and wanna seriously (re)start AC:Odyssey) and last Spring a new gaming PC for RDR2 .. These two are my recent years additions.. Now, kinda on/off topic, and I don't remember if it has been mentioned in this forum, but some nice dude at Dungeon Synth reddit posted ( www.reddit.com/r/DungeonSynth/comments/jvhuxp/ds_on_nintendo_ds/ ) that there is a very nice little program from Korg for the NDS for some music creating stuff.. Ended up loading it up on my own NDS, and while I'm not a musician , I can use some improvisation before sleeping at night !! Well worth the look for anyone here not having a DS.. There is a dude on youtube who has done some nice stuff with it.. Again, not sure if I saw it also here but I don't remember for sure and wanted to mention it since I really really liked the Korg NDS app..
