You might be interested in this website: www.vgmusic.com/It's a website that archives video game music, and has over 30,000 MIDI files from old games. A lot of older RPGs, especially western RPGs, have the digital equivalent of folk music in MIDI form, or feature dirge-like songs. To me, that's the closest you can get to DS in the video game world, and that website is a vast archive of such gems.

I spent last weekend trying to convince my niece and nephew that this is one of the best game soundtracks of all time. The kids recently got one of those mini SNES Classic consoles and it has Donkey Kong Country on it. I told them that I loved the second game in the series, specifically the soundtrack. Although it has absolutely no relation to DS in style or substance, it is one of the best video game soundtracks that I know of. I agree, I love both the game and the soundtrack too! Perhaps a more DS-themed soundtrack is the one from Final Fantasy VII, at least some parts of it. Again, it's not NES, but it's still a full synth composition.

I have a link for you too, since you like DKC2: www.dropbox.com/sh/g70cosiqz1tsjkp/AAAUWIfzy5jbc98_vVgXz2EWa/Restored%20Tracks?dl=0The owner of this Dropbox folder has found a way to retrieve the master tracks from DKC and remaster them in high definition (I found the link in this YT channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCY1W9W8gP-cRPHudE6o-f7w).

It's really trippy that you mentioned VGMusic here, because I've often said that what appeals to me about Dungeon Synth is not only the similarity to gaming music but it's proximity to MIDI as a musical medium. When I was a adolescent, as early as Middle School, I used to mess around with MIDIs from VGMusic on Midisoft and eventually Anvil Studio. I would often print them out when I was in High School and get some of my friends in the band to jam out with me to game music. My exposure to MIDI also lead me to writing small pieces for the concert band to play at informal events. I also wrote a bunch of my own compositions with MIDI instruments for my own enjoyment. Every time I listen to or create Dungeon Synth I'm reminded of my MIDI and VGMusic experiments in some way.
