Hello, May I introduce my project: BåvingrI'm a bass player, playing in bands for about 20 years until fatherhood. I thought that was the end of my involvement in making music for a few years until I saw the "dungeon synth" tag on Bandcamp and discovered this magickal subterranean world to which I thought I could contribute. Here's my first completed track soundcloud.com/user-342409713/dorians-towerAny comments/criticism on things like composition/mix etc would be very much appreciated as part of the learning process! Because I am interested in these details I made it using Bitwig (8-track initially until I upgraded to Studio 2 because I loved it so much) All sounds are presets from the FM-4 and Polysynth instruments apart from the timpani ( Kettledrum) and Mellotron ( Redtron) It was mastered online by Cloudbounce. Thanks to stormcrow for that tip!

Nice to know you mastered with Cloudbounce. Have you got a positive experience with that service?

I'm listening now. Not bad for just starting out. It has a very fat sound, not sure if I necessarily like that, but it's unique and maybe worth honing if it's the sound you're looking for. Redtron is cool.

Redtron is cool. Thanks andrewwerdna for taking time to listen and give your thoughtful feedback. The fatness wasn’t exactly intentional but I do like my bass to be heard. I think the bass presets are dance music-oriented, rather than low strings or horns or whatever. Definitely too much sustain anyway… Good point about it being a unique sound though – I will ponder on that and see what comes out in my next tracks. Not sure if I’m at the stage of having a “cohesive sound” yet or just making music and seeing how it comes out. I’ve always loved the sound of the Mellotron... it was a last minute addition to this track, I had a string sound for the backing chords and it was clashing with something. I spent a long time trying to fix it with EQ, then I just swapped it with Redtron and I thought it sounded much better. Cheers!

Another track "The Keep" soundcloud.com/user-342409713/the-keep up on Soundcloud. Attempting a more epic battle march feel on this one, combined with something that turned out sounding like computer game music.

Attempting a more epic battle march feel on this one, combined with something that turned out sounding like computer game music. I really like the start a lot, quality one !! Minor drawback that the organ on 2.09 and after sounds a little bit flat and unnatural in not a good sense and after that the track kinda gets off a little bit by merging too many different ideas.. All in all there's a lot, maybe too lot , maybe you could stick to less things in one song!! Keep it true and thanx for sharing!! Hope you release some stuff on bandcamp soon!

Thanks for listening and commenting crystallogic13 Hope you are not lost in necropolis! Hmmm, maybe I will expand on the intro/outro for a completely different track. RE the organ - do you mean the brassy lead part that comes in about then, rather than the chords in the background? I get what you mean about too many ideas, maybe fewer sections but develop them more... My New Year's Resolution was to release music on Bandcamp this year, we'll see! Cheers!!

Still lost in Necropolis mate, searching for the Veils of Negative Existence !! Glad to give some feedback, again best wishes for a bandcamp release!! I meant probably the "brassy lead part" BUT now that I listen to it I'm more used to it I think! Again, good work!!

honestly, Dorian's Tower is my favourite. It has something that fits with my idea of DS.

Interesting! I was thinking that that one wasn't really very dungeon synthy and the the new track was an attempt to sound MORE dungeon synthy! But then results can wander far from intentions.

But then results can wander far from intentions. Oh yes, it happens more frequently than we think, but there's nothing wrong in this if the result works somehow.

[DSK brass fanfare] Here's my 1st proper EP! 3 tracks of dungeon synth inspired by the paintings of J. W. Waterhouse who was inspired by the writings of Homer. bavingr.bandcamp.com/album/bycirceLet me know what you think! Thanks to everyone on the forum who has answered my questions or written answers to past questions which I found incredibly helpful...

...just listened! This is an admirable improvement in skills and songwriting! I love the orchestration and the attention you put in melodic themes, so rare in DS! And, yes, the lyrical "sea" feel is perfect, that's the most important thing from my point of view.
Track n.4 is my favourite at this moment.
