The night started creeping towards us as he started his playing. Rusty strings clanged and rang outside in the fields as darkness got closer and gave it's cold kiss. A first step into the world of twisted dungeon folk atmospheres, winter is passing and summer is in the horizon but the emptiness has made its home. Minimalistic dungeon folk and free folk atmospheres crafted during the last nights of winter. A glimpse of something more too is caught in the horizon... ridgedweller.bandcamp.com/album/ridge-dweller

I'm a guitarist so I can't help listening to your project carefully, as soon as I can! Welcome!

I feel as though Iβm missing something...I keep expecting to hear synths and stuff but maybe I am missing the point of what you were trying to do...looks/sounds pretty cool though

Thanks for the feedback! One of the ideas of Ridge Dweller is to try to bring more acoustic influences into DS; hence the term "dungeon folk". In the future recordings though, more ingredients might be added to the bitter soup.

I guess I was just wondering what qualifies your release as "dungeon" versus just regular sorta free folk stuff. I mean I'm all for more acoustic stuff, I just feel like if it's only acoustic then it starts to become a different thing...

I just want to say that I'm enjoying this project immensely and would gladly buy a tape once they're finished. Although I understand what Tyrannus is saying, I personally disagree, as dungeon synth is such a loose genre that mood and intention account for quite a bit. If you wanna make dungeon folk with a sole guitar, do it! Hails and support.

I think itβs certainly open for interpretation but Iβm curious as to what everyone thinks it means

Iβm curious as to what people interpret the βdungeonβ genre modifier to actually mean. I think itβs certainly open for interpretation but Iβm curious as to what everyone thinks it means It isn't this that's for sure. I might argue differently. βDungeon Synthβ is implying that this is a sub genre of synth music with the dungeon modifier added, which theoretically makes dungeon folk a completely valid thing even without synths. Synthesizer and dark ambient music existed before Mortiis, and when we compare Mortiisβ Era 1 output with previous dark ambient music, we find that it possesses a minimalist, slow, albeit still melodic sound, with ominous/dark undertones and a focus on black metal subject matter/visual aesthetics. When applied to folk music, dungeon folk in theory would fall in line with these same distinctions, and this demo does that. Slow, ominous sounds combined with lonely imagery and a focus on minimalism. Hence the name, dungeon folk. Furthermore, I feel as though this goes without saying, but the subject matter of dungeon synth doesnβt necessarily have to be medieval, as shown by many supernatural horror or nature themed projects. Therefore the subject matter of this demo works as well.

Ridge Dweller, I like what you've done here. You've given everyone a new release that sounds lonesome and ominous, you've given us bitchin album artwork to appreciate and you've stirred up some nice conversation.
To me, a Dungeon is a Dungeon is a Dungeon, but I'm no authority on the topic. The only thing I find slightly misleading is the use of the tag "Dungeon Synth" on your BC page. You've definitely got the Dungeon vibe as far as I'm concerned, but without any synth to speak of, I can understand the confusion. It's like me telling people to head on over to the MAUSOLEI page for some sultry R&B with a few Cat Stevens covers to close out the album.
That being said, you've certainly got a home in the Dungeon. I really enjoyed this release and I look forward to your future releases.

As I said earlier, all the components of a dungeon vibe are here, just without the specific usage of synths. Keep it up, looking forward to hearing more from this project!

Dungeon Synth must have synth or its minimalist accoustic folk or something, if people who listen to DS like it that's cool but no synth = no DS imo.
