I'm sure everyone here has a predilection for the miserable and the somber in music but which song(s) would you consider to be the saddest? Anything counts, even Dungeon Synth obviously.
I just posted "Nothing Without You" by Skin on /Cool Songs/ and I don't want to duplicate posts but I would definitely include it in this category, such an absolute downer!
I'll kick it off with "May I Kiss Your Wound?" by Sopor Aeternus. Funnily enough I don't think Sopor makes enough sad songs but the ones I like are really sorrowful especially with lyrics like this:

"Gloomy Sunday" by Hungarian composer Rezso Seress, who later committed suicide. Some people say more people have committed suicide to this song than any other, and that listening to it can evoke suicidal feelings.

Lots of people made versions of it too, I'm listening to Pallbearer's now! Thanks!!

Heartbreaking chorus. Robert N. Taylor gives me the creeps though.

We were just talking about Bauhaus in the goth thread, but this song is my go-to for that utmost miserable sound.

I imagine some of you have at least encountered the name "Yung Lean" somewhere on the internet before, but I'd venture to assume nobody here has any taste for him (I could be wrong, because I for one love him).
Yung Lean came to fame as a Swedish meme rapper, essentially, who rode the vaporwave hype early on in his musical career before developing a sound that was more ethereal and industrial at times. Lean later started another project, more personal and introspective, called jonatan leandoer127, and the songs he's released under that project are clearly inspired by Daniel Johnston. This song, "Agony", was released on the latest Yung Lean studio album, Stranger, but bears close resemblances to his other project, jonatan leandoer127.
Lean's a big fan of black metal (Darkthrone, Bathory, Burzum, Lifelover, etc.) and he's got a great visual/musical aesthetic. He's also obsessed with synth artists like Alessandro Cortini, calling Cortini's AVANTI his "favorite album". He'd prize any fans he was able to garner in a place like this! So, see if you don't like this song, and see if it makes you sad.
I was racking my brain for something that would be both suitably sad and interesting (different?) for this thread, and it dawned on me. This is my go-to when I want to feel that melancholic buzz of isolation, sadness, and self-reflection. (If you enjoy this song, I would recommend you also listen to both "hotel in minsk" and "never again" by jonatan leandoer127.)
Note that Lean has experienced the tragedy of losing a close friend, years of drug addiction, and a rather lengthy stay at a mental hospital. He was 18 or 19 when he was at his worst, and he's 21 as of now. There is real sadness behind "Agony".

I had no intention to double-post and over saturate this thread with my thoughts, but here I am...
Corbin is another young hip-hopper/r&b singer type with truly sad songs (I'm only pushing these kids because I feel like they are worthy the attention).
Corbin here is from Minnnesota, USA and creates gloomy, emotional, atmospheric, and reverb-drenched songs with interesting synth work on the beats.
He manages to evoke this strangely apocalyptic sound with his first full album, Mourn. I had it on repeat when I was feeling down a while back. It's absolutely dazzling and sooo moody.
I recommend this track specifically, "Giving Up". (THIS IS NOT LIL PEEP. I would never...)
If you like it at all, immediately check out his video for the song "Hunker Down", it's my personal favorite. Then listen to "Revenge Song", which is his most impressive song to date with amazing synth work laying down the foundation.

I actually like Corbin, my ex-girlfriend introduced me to him. Reminds me of her, in a bittersweet way.

I enjoy rap sometimes, but I definitely do not get this Yung Lean kind of stuff. Is this what people are talking about when they say "soundcloud rap?" From what I've heard the beats are often pretty cool and atmospheric, but the vocal style and lyrics totally rub me the wrong way, and goes for all those folks with "yung" and "lil" in their name. It does make me sad though, but more for the state of society, not in way that I can relate.

I think Yung Lean has graduated from being grouped in with "soundcloud rap" at this point, but I agree with your take on the vocal style/lyrics. He's by no means a talented lyricist or singer/mc (he's almost talent-less in these regards). The song I posted is not a rap song in my opinion, even if he is a rapper, and I was trying to draw more attention to this specific song than his music as a whole. This song is very sad to me His music is pretty much 100% take it or leave it. There's nothing to it behind what strikes your ears. It's more about his brand and personality and his tastes than anything. Definitely not for everyone. I personally love it, him being one of my favorite artists ever. I'd be curious to know what rap music you do enjoy, though!

I thought "soundcloud rap" referred to a specific style or trend rather than just referring to artists being on soundcloud, and I thought it was a style he sort of originated. But I admit I'm totally ignorant of that stuff. You're right about that not being a rap song, I just wanted to speak about him more generally. It's all subjective, but I just wanted to share that so far my reaction to everything I've heard by him (and those similar rappers) has been a kind of an instinctual revulsion. I'm not trying to talk shit. I just think it's interesting because most people probably have that same reaction to black metal and maybe even dungeon synth. I definitely just have a surface-level interest in it. It's not a headspace I like spend too much time in, especially because the stuff I tend to like musically has such stupid lyrics. I like the rhythm of the rhymes, but I usually have to ignore what they're saying to actually enjoy it. From what dabbling I've done I guess I like Houston and Tennessee rap a bit more consistently than the rest of it. The only rap related stuff I really listen to anymore is DJ Smokey type beat stuff, and even that's only occasionally.

Back more to the topic of the thread, Der Golem - Zmet is one of the bleakest albums I know of.

Cool thread, thereβs definitely plenty more on this broad subject.
I mostly liked the Spooky Black album but not a fan of the Corbin one really.

This really.. Masterpiece song, perfection in both music and lyrics.. The theme is vaguely(almost..) about drugs I guess..
(The song ends with "Take me away, from the life that I hate", not on the lyrics above for some reason..)
Also imho the best swedish death album and one of the best ever really.. Masterpiece in its whole..
