Hey everyone!! Since I didn't want to spam even more Stormcrow's / Sidereal Fortress' Thread, -especially since he has a new great release! - I open this thread for some recommendations of traditional mainly (but not exclusively probably) Greek music mostly pre-80s that maybe some people could enjoy here! So without further ado , let me start with my two favorites, two legends in Greek music, chronologically :
Vasilis Tsisanis (1915-1984) (Greek : Βασίλης Τσιτσάνης) .
A legend and accepted as such widely in Greek culture, he was one of the originals in greek traditional music. Singing live always, along with his company, always stoned and singing about it too, it shows in the heavyness of his voice and of course in his style. If you can imagine yourself in 1930s-60s in old Athens' small taverns (dunno if it translates to that though) full of smoke, people stoned and enjoying music but being bad asses of their era, that it was as heavy as it could get , this is it in my opinion! A legend again and with endless gems.. In the wikipedia link here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vassilis_Tsitsanis you can read the bare basics.
One Favorite Track : "Τα Ματόκλαδά σου Λάμπουν" (Your Eyelashes Shine)
It's one of the most defining classics in all of greek discography actually. The above song is a classic love song about a woman but with many hidden references to weed, especially the main line "Ta matoklada sou lampoun"(Your eylashes shine) being widely translated as "Your eyes are blazing" (the redness from the weed effect)..Nowadays since he's way old artist with his original releases being on I guess ancient vinyls, would be enjoyed listening an Anthology of him. Beware that there exist countless tributes to him and it's easy to be confused if it's a compilation of him or other famous people singing his classics..
Another legend, my personal favorite, who unfortunately died while his in his prime but while already having produced a wealth of music for generations to enjoy.. While Tsitsanis was expressing the Athenian early 20th century era with weed, police, love, honor and badassness , Xylouris was expressing traditional Cretan music, having its roots to mountaineer's and shepherds, singing about old life in the mountains, as far and diverse as modern themes like war and politics of 70s(and still relevent today) era. For both of them really Legend is appropriate and these two are the two most widely accepted Elders in greek music!!
Xylouris has endless gems from his vault, it was hard to even pick one but I wanted to give only one from each artist :
Song: Itane Mia Fora(Ήτανε Μια Φορά" Translation " "There once was" )
This song is about a woman waiting for her man who is on the open seas hunting for pirates (we had here too historically). I really can not express how much his emotions are translated with the lyrics, maybe I'll even try to translate to you tomorrow the get a grip of the story! As with Tsitsanis, if you look more, be careful to listen to him singing his song and not some of the tributes.. A legend for Greece as well as Crete too... I will maybe post another of his song talking about the mountains which I think will relate well with our DS forum here!! His wikipedia article is good too : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikos_Xilouris
