I think good, classic adventures usually had puzzles you could figure out (emphasis on the word GOOD here!). The best ones had an internal logic you had to understand, and then things were doable. I think the second Discworld game is a prime example: lots of puzzles that seemed totally random, until you understood in what way they referenced Pratchett's books. Then some were weird and hard, but still doable. Or that one puzzle in one of the original Monkey Quest games where you had to put an item weighing you down (an anchor?) into your inventory - because nothing ever weighs anything in your inventory, haha. IMO it was always a sign of bad design, if you had to hunt for pixels or resort to entirely random solutions.
Two of my favourite adventure/puzzle games were the two first Penumbra games. The puzzles required some thinking, but they all were entirely logical. It was great playing them together with my wife (I played, she watched) as it was really good to have someone to figure the puzzles out with.

A game soundtrack, that has impressed me at an early age was the soundtrack of the Siege of Avalon games. Set in the fictional world Eurale that is in war with evil forces, the game is about the siege of the Avalon castle. The soundtrack perfectly captures the confinement you would feel during a siege. The fact, that the soundtrack consists mostly of MIDI files complements those feelings. Unfortunately you can only find HD remakes on youtube, but you can download some of the MIDI files on the homepage of the composer Bjorn Lynne: www.lynnemusic.com/midi.html

Well said Andrew and DDC!! Sorry for the late post but as usually catching up!! While I was used to Sierra early games with their faults, I was also quickly exposed to the perfection of Monkey Island 1 and its glory.. Indeed there were bad puzzles like the spitting contest in MI2 though, but no dead ends, great pace , fitting puzzles, figurable.. Pure perfection really... The only game in the early Sierra games that was as great was of course Hero Quest 1/Quest for Glory 1 , but that's a beast on its own as an adventure-RPG hybrid reaching perfection... Both games great music too, and of course QFG1 is really DS in spirit imo!!
Anyway, I'm glad I've had time to play all those games in the past since today there's just sooo little time to play anything besides rare opportunity windows!!
Anfortas thanx for the rec, I'll look into that!!

Lately I'm really into DQ XI and its breath-taking soundtrack. I do prefer the orchestral version to the digital one, which is hardly the case with video game OSTs.

theswordthatsang , DQ easily has some of the best soundtracks in video games. Still my favorite RPG series. I left off on DQXI like 75% of the way through last winter and just picking it up again now.
This soundtrack is super bizarre, but I'm kind of loving it. This track is not DS by any means, but something about it reminds me of the feel of DS, maybe how it just disregards how weird it actually is.

I love how that was both eerie and beautiful. Perhaps that's why it reminds you of DS? That - and the harp, haha. DQ is amazing. It's super engaging as well as easy to leave alone for a while, only to return later.

I need to pick up DQXI again and start playing it more. I really love it so far. I know some people really had a problem with the music in the western release because it was midi but I thought it was just fine. It felt really nostalgic to me, like it reminded me of playing FFVII late at night in middle school.

That one has a fully orchestrated soundtrack, which is absolutely beautiful. The demo of this version is just pure gold. 10 Hours of gameplay. For a demo!

Never played that game unfortunately, but I love Warhammer and this music is amazing. I had the privilege of making a pilgrimage to the Games Workshop headquarters in Nottingham UK last winter... truly a life-changing experience.

Not really DS adjacent but I really enjoy the soundtrack to the Devil May Cry games. The first one does have some good ambient tracks though:
