Has anyone here toyed around with making their own music videos and/or live visuals? If so, what software/hardware/other fun stuff do you use?
I've put together a simple-ish video to go along with my live set. Only ever used it at NEDS 2019, but now that I have my own projector, I'm hoping to break it out a little more. The only software I have available to me right now is the windows movie maker 2012, which is hot garbage as far as they go, but you can get some sorta-kinda-alright looking stuff out of it. Once I get around to upgrading my PC to windows 10 I might get openshot.
I've also been playing with basic stop-animation, done in a super-rudimentary fashion. Basically drawing and tracing stuff on notecards, taking photos of them, editing them to "fit" each other, and stringing them together in movie maker. It's a bit of an arduous process, so I doubt I'll utilize too too many of them in visual right now.

I haven't done any myself but I've played a couple of shows where we had an old school liquid light show. You shoot a projection of layers of colored oil swirling around in liquid with an overhead projector. It's super cool in conjunction with psychedelic music.

It was born out of an experiment using Inkscape, Gimp, and Davinci Resolve. All free software btw.
You can build a scene, and then I just place the camera and screen record, then do some video editing to put it all together.
Something I've toyed with for a while and made some neat visuals for my brother's band years ago is Mandelbulb3D/Mandelbulber: mandelbulber.com/It's a pain to get things just right though, and rendering takes forever. But the results can be really cool if you want an interesting background.
Looking at Blender again too since it's only gotten better since I first toyed with it about 10 years ago.
There are also a ton of visualizer apps out there you could use, and if you thrift (or download) old VHS tapes of fantasy movies and shows and such you could toss that into a video editor with some effects to get a decent background.
