If you haven't been keeping up, Spitfire LABS has put out a couple of really great free plugins with some really wild origins that sound like they're just made for doing dungeon synth: This is wonderful, exactly what I've been looking for to get started, really helpful

If you haven't been keeping up, Spitfire LABS has put.... I haven't been, but my project list is clearing up again, so I should have the time to look into it at the least.

Synth1, Vital, Zebralette (iirc).
In many ways, sticking with some of this stuff would have saved me quite a bit these last few years i've been trying to make music. But instead I got sucked into the 'professional' mindset with emulations. But there are tons of good free options

FYI, it's been a good couple of days for DS-friendly synths.
Second, AudioKit made their King of FM synth app for iOS and (M1) Mac free. It samples DX7, DX7II, TX81z, and SY77 synths and has a bunch of other features.
