I used to use Xasthur as the soundtrack to my reading of the Berserk manga, back when that series was still worth going through. I think the Nocturnal Poisoning album art had a lot to do with it. I think this is a fantastic combination. I have a few combos like this I do myself (unrelated to metal really), but I certainly see this being a great mix of aesthetics

I think this is a fantastic combination. I have a few combos like this I do myself (unrelated to metal really), but I certainly see this being a great mix of aesthetics It's really strange how we can subconsciously associate related aesthetics and build little worlds in our heads from the pieces of information we get from various forms of art. I can't remember how exactly this particular one started, but it just makes so much sense to me. Berserk takes place in a pre-modern setting, and Xasthur's music rejects a lot of "modern" sensibilities found elsewhere in metal that relate to its roots in rock music, making it more otherworldly and strange to listen to. Both have a similar darkness to them, but it's not something like Satanism or generic horror -- there's that added element of the natural surroundings, the forest, and the overall atmosphere of not only being in a rough and ghastly situation, but being in another time entirely. I'm listening to "Winterglow" by Velvet Cacoon right now on a rainy day that is unseasonably cold, which is what made me come back to this post. Maybe it's time to pull out some Berserk while I'm at it. But I think Velvet Cacoon does hit on some similar stuff to Xasthur. Unfortunately, though, the majority of "depressive black metal" just sounds flat and too shoegazy to really fit with this feeling.

To be honest, I very much want to start reading Berserk again and listen to Xasthur while doing so lol I'm glad you brought this up! One of my go-to combinations has been Superman comics and jazz music, which is going to make me want to start up a jazz thread now

I always thought more of Batman when it came to jazz, at least the noir-ish cool jazz club stuff.

Profoundemonium, I'd probably get this if it was on CD. Seems like a re-release of Funeral of Being with different art and a new title? That's my favorite Xasthur album, too.

It's basically the demo version of the album released with the original title. Unfortunately there will be no CD release as far as I know. The label will put in a CDr burn if you ask for it, though.
