Love the darker, minimal production of the early stuff.

emerge, absolutely. The People are People compilation tape was constantly on in my truck in high school (along with New Order's Technique and Killing Joke's Brighter Than a Thousand Suns, both of which I still hold to be their best). It's just misc tracks, b-sides, and mixes of stuff from Broken Frame, Construction Time Again, and Some Great Reward. That first half of the 80s for them plus Black Celebration is easily their best era. I suppose Black Celebration is more lush but it's one of my favorites.

The first DM song I heard was Enjoy the Silence, and Catching Up With Depeche Mode was the first compilation I had. Now i've got a handful of the earlier albums & singles on vinyl and Violator on CD somewhere.

Speaking of Depeche Mode, here's a modern band, now defunct, which had an acknowledged influence from Depeche Mode, clearly a strong 80s New Wave influence but all this early music influence in the vocal lines, plus some truly strange, funny, disturbing lyrics. extralife.bandcamp.com/track/strong-brother-weak-brother

After years of battling problems with drugs and alcohol, Alice Cooper got really weird in the early 80's. He even wrote and recorded 2 full albums that he never toured for and does not have any recollection of making. The fact that he has had so many different distinct periods in his career is one of the reasons he's among my favorite artists.
From 1982's "Zipper Catches Skin"

I think this is a bad album with a lot of amazing songs on it. I believe Bad is his best album from start to finish, in sequence.

nahadoth, I see your point. I actually haven't listened to Bad from start to finish, need to do that.
