This album is insane and maniacally hell-ish. Black metal symphony plays while little laughing demons escape from flaming pits and tear people's eyes out, etc

haha, I remember that album, haven't listened to it in forever. I loved it but in a guilty way, in the same way that I love Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon.

Reminds me of this album too quite a bit, which I adore from beginning to end. The vocals on this track in particular are brilliantly bonkers.

andrewwerdna , I think the only Arcturus album I've heard is the older one with the green cover. I don't remember if I liked it, feel like I didn't. This Sigh album is amazing though. I love the concept and lyrics. I don't know if you have the CD, but the insert fold-out picture is so cheesy, it's great. Listening to this Arcturus track now and I'm not that into it. I like the harmonization that occurs for a bit right before the vocals come back in at like 1:30, a little goth metal sounding. I might like this more if it had different vocals. Not liking this guy's singing voice that much.

I can understand not liking that Arcturus track, and the whole album even, but if you don't like Aspera Hiems Symfonia I don't even know what to say. That album is a absolute masterpiece.

I'll have to give it another listen. It's probably been about eight years since I last heard it. I remember thinking it wasn't as special as it was hyped up to be, but I also listened to it through speakers at a work computer that was outside, so it probably wasn't the best method.

Gave the album another listen. It's just okay. A lot of it kind of rides on the same feeling, tracks start to blend and I think the synth follows the guitar too closely a lot of the time. Not many parts really stood out to me or were especially interesting, even considering it's held as like one of the top early progressive/symphonic bm albums. Just kind of neutral throughout. The first track and the last two tracks I liked the most. Last two were the most distinct.

I've never heard any Arcturus I liked. Apart from La Masquerade Infernale, which I love. I've given Aspera Hiems Symfonia countless tries throughout the year, and... well, nada. And everything after La Masquerade Infernale is just boring to me, it doesn't do absolutely anything for me. But that one album is just pure magic. I remember listening to it on repeat during midnight train rides basically an entire winter, and it always brings to me memories of standing on a deserted train station platform, watching the snow fall slowly and the stars glimmering far up there in the black of space.

I agree about the stuff after La Masquerade Infernale, never worked for me at all. And idk guys, I don't get how one cannot love Aspera Hiems Symfonia, it's so catchy and still has such an authentically black atmosphere.

Not sure how many people on the board are into grind, but this is definitely one of the best grindcore albums ever made (fantastic lyrics in all of their stuff, too):
Just posted the whole album despite this thread being about individuals songs because it's 12 minutes long

The best IDM track, probably the best IDM album as well

I haven't gotten into much IDM besides Aphex Twin. I gave Autechre a shot a long time ago but it didn't click, but clearly I should try again because that's an awesome song.

I have to say that I have more than once confused tracks on Aspera with tracks on Borknagar's debut. I love hearing Garm's harsh vox, but there was a point in the Norwegian scene where the experimental stuff kind of plateaued, and I think half of that first Arcturus album suffers a bit from that. I may may be the only person for whom The Sham Mirrors is a favorite. Lots of experimental cliches by that point, including the weird trip hop breakdown in the second track, but Garm's fully clean vox are so bombastic and borderline glam, and I think the songwriting is pretty strong. And i I love that Sigh album. They didn't completely abandon the fun heavy metalish vibe from Gallows Gallery but still had space for some gothic horror influence. I forget about Hangman's Hymn a lot but it is a really solid, well crafted album.

Actually, all this thinking about Garm circa early 2000s brings me to this tune. Pretty sure I only checked out the album because the label advertised Garm's guest spot, but as a result I found out about The Gathering, so not bad
