We all know this, right? Who among us does not adore Dark Medieval Times? Step forward and be reckoned.

Nemesis Divina was THE album that thrusted me into black metal. The intro to "Dawn of a New Age" just blasted me from being a generic skater kid in high school to a full-blown trve kvlt metaller by the end of the track. To this day I still see it as one of the quintessential black metal albums.

Good album, had an interesting music video too.
I got into Nemesis Divina somewhat late. And especially The Shadowthrone. Dark Medieval Times had been one of my absolute favorite black metal albums for years, and then I discover there's basically a "Part 2" to that album!
But Satyricon was also pretty essential to my introduction to black metal as well. Oddly enough The Forest is my Throne was my introduction to Satyricon, not in any special kvlt way, but just when I was a teenager that's all I happened to find in the scant metal section at my local big chain cd store, but what a lucky discovery that was. Listening to that for the first time while walking at the chilled end of fall at sunset with the smell of controlled forest fires on the air, one of my most treasured listening experiences.

Dark Medieval Times is absolutely one of the best albums I've ever heard. It truly transports me to another world. I love The Shadowthrone, but Dark Medieval Times will always be THE quintessential medieval black metal album in my opinion.
I also think that Satyr had the most hateful vocals in the early Norwegian scene.

Satyricon always has those catchy riffs. On those older, rawer albums, but I think their newer work is not that bad neither. It is not very memorable, but can be fun to listen to from time to time. While Dark Medival Times just brings you to another world, way more impressing.

While Dark Medival Times just brings you to another world, way more impressing. Songs like K.I.N.G. and Repined Bastard Nation hold up really well. As you come up further through the discography the songs start to blur into one and other. The last two albums are by far the weakest, though I don't dislike them.

The Shadowthrone is my personal favourite, Dark Medieval Times and Nemesis Divina as well but after that was all kind of downhill for me...I'm not saying it was shit just not as good

When I first started getting into black metal, around 2001-2002, this band was STILL getting a lot of negative reaction from the release of Rebel Extravaganza in certain unnamed corners of the internet that I frequented in high school - so it took me awhile to give them a proper listen.
The Forest/Yggdrasil split was my first, and remains my favorite probably only because I'm weirdly clingy about the first album I hear from a band I like.

The Forest/Yggdrasil split was my first, and remains my favorite probably only because I'm weirdly clingy about the first album I hear from a band I like. I have a similar relationship to most bands and albums, and not even necessarily the ones I just like. Of course there are plenty of exceptions too. I love Dark Medieval Times, always have but I've a bit more complex feelings with the rest of the discography. Ok, not that complex really. I had a hard time adjusting to The Shadowthrone, Vikingland was just so damn goofy! It has great songs too, some of the best actually but does not work as well as an album for me as DMT did. I was very dissappointed with Nemesis Divina when it came out. My friends gushing about it made it even harder to grasp. It has its moments too and I liked the "Mother North" video for all its audacity. Since then I can't say I'd been very pleased with any Satyricon album released (no, that's not true, I liked "Volcano" quite a bit for a while after its release but grew weary of it soon). DMT and The Shadowthrone I keep revisiting, other albums not so much. Interstingly I didn't really like any of the demos much, I wonder if it has anything to do with me hearing them after I had already listend to DMT and TS? I also wonder how much my less-than-positive-impressions of Satyr I got from early fanzines influenced the general relationship I have with the band and their music. TallennaTallenna

I've actually never heard the first 2 albums. Was mostly familiar with the later albums (when I was regularly listening to them a number of years ago), especially "Now, Diabolical" & "Volcano". Haven't been crazy about the last 3, but I went back a few months ago and listened to "Nemesis Divina" & "Rebel Extravaganza" and enjoy both. I'll get to "The Shadowthrone" and "Dark Medieval Times" or the EPs at some point soon.

The new album is surprisingly good:
I'm actually not really into anything they did after Nemesis Divina save for this album. I actually think this one is better than Nemesis, but then again I wasn't really into Nemesis (honestly it's where I thought they started to get a repetitively bland territory). All of their albums after their first two carried this spark of hope like "where are they going next?", but everything just fell short. Rebel was a mess and uninteresting, riding the late 90s trends. Their next three were boring. I wish their self-titled was better. It started strong, but tapered off pretty quickly and they just didn't do enough with it. This new album though was surprisingly good. I didn't expect much from it, but the riffs are pretty kool, drumming is more interesting, production isn't overdone and fairly pleasing, I like the art (I don't know why people hate the cover). It's a good balance of experimentation and them being comfortable with themselves. Still not beating out Dark Medieval Times. Shadowthrone was a good album but I don't remember it very well, has been a while.

Dark Medieval Times was one of the first black metal albums I bought. That and the split with Enslaved belong to my quintessential black metal albums without a doubt. Post-Nemesis Divina Satyricon does absolutely nothing to me, and even The Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina pale in comparison to the majesty of Dark Medieval Times, IMO.

Listening to that Black Wings and Withering Gloom track, that riff at 1:40 is pretty great. I'll need to check out the album. Satyricon often seems to have riffs that really hook me. I love everything up to and including Nemesis Divina. Dark Medieval Times is the best, but I feel like The Shadowthrone is very close and I've come to love it just as much. I was listening to Nemesis Divina a week or so ago and thinking it was also right up there and that I need to give it more attention because I always seem to overlook it when I'm revisiting Satyricon.
And also I gotta admit I'll occasionally throw on Now Diabolical as a guilty pleasure, it's garbage but it's catchy. The other post-Nemesis Divina stuff I've heard doesn't even have that to offer.
