I've done a few live shows as Svartedauden in the past, one in a basement and a couple at a local venue. It really does help that it's a two-man project, though, as we can have varied sounds and more layers than a single person with a keyboard could achieve (although I've been thinking about doing something like that in the future, very very stripped-down). We just set up couple of keyboards to amplifiers/PA system and played our songs, with lights dimmed and a lot of candles lit. We wore robes (really cheap ones, not that nice to look at but cheap) and spoke very little between songs. We even have a banner of the group name in runes. For a couple of the shows the audience sat on the floor and got to zone out to the music - despite being on a stage it was very intimate with the low light and dungeon synth atmospheres. I think that if you can do it somewhere a little unconventional like a basement or an attic where you can be close to the audience and surround them in ambiance then you can really make it work. You wouldn't happen to have any recordings of your live shows, would you? Well, since you asked...yes! -----> svartesynth.bandcamp.com/album/live-from-the-shamansaunaNo video recordings at all, but we did capture our very first live ritual on tape to immortalize it, just with a tape recorder in the back of the basement where the show was held (hence the creaks you can hear of the floor above). I wish we had video!

I'd like to thank you all for your input on this topic. It has been very helpful in planning my future performances. I have purchased a 4 track tape recorder which I will use to lay down and live mix some ambient tracks while also playing a keyboard on top. Having troubles finding a venue at all for this music I guess the idea of a basement gig isn't bad at all, perhaps just for some close friends or something. I would love of course to do some of the tracks from my albums, but as a one man act that seems to be impossible to pull off at the moment without most of it being just play back.

Also I had another thought. There are many here that seems interested in a dungeon synth live performance though distance will of course be an issue. Do any of you think there would be any interest in a live stream performance? I think it would be a way to bring the bedroom aspect into the live performance. It could perhaps take away some of the cozyness, but I figure DS is very much an internet friendly genre so what not an online gig.

Live stream performances aren't unheard of for a lot of weird online-centric electonic music, so it might work out. I think it might lose a sense of viscerality, but I'd tune in. Not sure if everyone would be up for it though, but I mean it's free so why not.

I'd also like to do like a regional meetup/informal miniature festival/concert in a basement. Like I know a lot of us are in the northeast, for instance, we could put together some spooky shit in someone's basement. I feel like it'd be really fun to just play with others

This is the stuff that grows a genre! (Even though I'm nowhere near the NE.) Does anyone know of a way we could map out where people (& interest) is? I'm imaging an online map where folks could drop pins for fan support, musician, and venue locations. Or, maybe the first step is just finding a good space and spreading the word? DS seems like a perfect genre to connect with an all-encompassing mini-fest type dealio with spooky jam sessions, over-the-top decorations, zine & tape trading, meat roasting on a spit, art sales, costumes, etc. My view of how this might pan out is definitely influenced by my ren-fair youth & teenage punk years, but something tells me such a background is far from unique among the dungeon dweller fanbase... P.S. Is there an agreed-upon moniker for DS fans?

P.S. Is there an agreed-upon moniker for DS fans? Someone was saying 'dungaroos' yesterday, haha. 'Dungeon-dwellers' is what I've heard the most, unofficially

Also yeah I'm stoked for a DS festival. I have some friend around here who do DS and I bet we could carpool or something. That might be fun for the summer, depending on how busy people are

My basement is basically just a huge unfinished room that takes up the whole house's footprint. If anyone can get up here in NY I have a venue and theoretically a lot of time

A mini dungeon synth fest would be awesome! A basement really seems like the most fitting place, decorated fittingly of course. With such a small group, the opportunities for customizing the atmosphere would be huge (and the trading of valuable relics).

I think that would be a really great way to spread around the scene in a productive way - by playing some live shows and having these kinds of mini festivals. We could also diversify a little bit - make it about the DS but also we could have people into OSR and other kinds of Tabletop RPGs, people into fantasy movies, books, art, etc, and have DS at the core - sort of like this forum. I think this is a direction we could actually go in since the genre is becoming rapidly more popular.

But regardless I really think it'd be awesome to create a semi-local "scene"
