There's been quite a bit more activity on the DS reddit in the last year or so. This inspired me to look into the Google search trends: Growth has gone exponential!! Here's the direct link: trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=dungeon%20synthDid something happen? Are we in a DS revival of some sort? A think-piece get published? Did someone get famous? My connection to the genre is 96% listening to it on my own in a darkened bedroom. What's going on in the world at large? For some weird reason, many things have happened almost simultaneously at the beginning of this year: the creation of this forum, compilations, the article in Bandcamp, that more recent video of which someone talked about here, and probably other things too. I also see that the fabebook groups are more active now. Maybe the key element was the Bandcamp article, as I think that video would have never happened if the article didn't happen. Sometimes the popularity of a genre comes from a single event (be it a church burning or an article on Bandcamp) and from then it grows exponentially for some time. The question is: how far this will go?

I was exposed to the old tower release from a different message board I post on. I really liked what I heard, and was surprised that this music was a whole genre that I knew nothing about. For years Ive been into electronic music, specifically house and trance, and also jamband music like phish and the grateful dead.
I have always liked ambient music sand it seems like DS is an extension of that.
I set out to find more about it, joined the Facebook group, found the youtube channel, and went all through band camp looking at releases.
Ones Ive been listening to. Old Tower, Chaucerin Myth, Utred, Depressive Silence, Thangoridim, Secret Stairways, Erang, I have more stuff waiting to be listened to.
Im new to the scene of DS, and definitely like it.

Welcome to the decadent pits of earnest escape and fantastical yearning.
I recommend all new listeners familiarize themselves with the Mortiis canon. I think it really is essential to understanding what it's about.
Mortiis - The Song of a Long Forgotten Ghost Mortiis - Født til å herske Mortiis - Ånden som gjorde opprør Mortiis - Keiser av en dimension ukjent Mortiis - Crypt of the Wizard Mortiis - The Stargate
Fata Morgana - Fata Morgana
Cintecele Diavolui - The Devil's Songs
Vond - Selvmord Vond - The Dark River

Excellent idea! It's always wise to set a canon. And I personally think that it improves creation, instead of limiting it.

Speaking of recommendations and a proper canon, I think I'll make a thread to discuss a proper 'recommended/essential listening' list. Some in-depth potential here.

While Mortiis has shaped and is such an influential figure in Dungeon Synth, Black Metal and Industrial(or whatever he plays now), just the covers for example of Vond might be off putting *I guess* for someone who's not coming here from such an "extreme" background.. Then again, just my two cents..

I can't help but find this a bit weird almost...i mean I think DS listening is a personal experience so it's hard to say "here's what will resonate most with you. Start here." Of course there are revered classics and it makes sense to recommend certain things but I mean the self-exploration feels more fun. But if people want that then go for it! I feel like there should be a flowchart maybe. Like offer different starting points (darkwave, black metal, heavy metal, modern classical, dark ambient, etc.) and where to go from there. I've been considering doing something like that

I've been considering doing something like that It does seem a bit strange considering the personal experience of DS, like album X may not be as transportative to person A as person B, but there are definitely some that are observed to hold more weight across the scene: Forgotten Pathways - Shrouded in Mystery, Depressive Silence - Mourning, Mortiis era 1, Burzum's prison albums, Wongraven, Abandoned Places discography, Lord Lovidicus works, etc. Are these albums more transportative than others? Maybe, and if so, why is that? I don't know if people take lists or charts as what will resonate most with them, I've always seen them as something like, "these albums are ones people seem to like a lot or are historically/canonically important for one reason or another". Like not everyone may like how bizarre Abandoned Places is, but you can definitely say he's a big inspiration for many and an important figure of the early BC scene, one of the most important fully digital DS artists.

I'm honestly pretty new to the genre myself, though I wish i had known about it for longer because it has come to mean so much to me. I think it was in a black metal thread on /mu/ last november. Some poeple started discussing dungeon synth so I thought I'd check it out. Now i'm here.
I didnt even realize there was a popularity boom going on though. I feel a little ingenuine as I'm surely a part of it.

I've been listening to DS for a few years but I'll admit my interest has increased greatly since around the same time you mentioned for yourself (and for some of the same activity on the same websites) so I can relate in that regard. All I can say is trust in the passion you feel for it. Only time can really tell whose passions and projects will endure. If we're all still around in a few years time, still having fun and keeping the scene alive, I'd call that a success. Right now is a tense time but I think if we all get through it, the community will be stronger as a result. I've been a fan of the music for some time but still consider myself pretty new to the community. But I don't doubt my passion for the genre so I just try to keep advancing.

It's well deserved and all it means is there is more room for ears to hear and minds to make. If a tree falls in the forest for no one to hear, then it never fell. So it is nothing but a good thing!

Looking at the chart now again, interesting to see how 20% downturn in searches since April (80 versus 100). Perhaps gives credence to the fact that it was introduced to a lot of new people via YT video, bandcamp article, and now we'll see that bubble burst a bit. Have to check this chart again in 6 months and see!
