This is a genre I have a very hard time finding the good stuff in, but when I do, it's amazing. I'm sure we all at least saw Erang's "Anti Future" release, thoughts on that? I for one thought it was an incredibly well executed triumph! Unfortunately, when trying to find more good stuff in the genre I end up coming across nothing but over-bloated crap that seems better suited for headband-dawning Coachella-goers :/ One of my favorite releases though has been this: theomegaproductionsrecords.com/album/a-murder-collection-the-original-motion-picture-soundtrackIt's labeled as an "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" but I'm almost 99% sure that's just an aesthetic/marketing farce. It's an incredible retro-future/synthwave debut from a current French artist that is never overbearing in it's production and always on point with melody and patterns. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd very much love to check some stuff out! I posted in the Soundtrack thread that I've been listening to the Terminator (1) soundtrack a lot lately, as it's also such a great record in this genre

Erangs antifuture is great. This is the same thing: lazerpunk.bandcamp.comBut i would say that i think erangs time travel from his kingdom to his anti-future is a great and interesting concept. Then there is som deathelektro that has simular sounds but is more dance driven. I recommend "danger". And if like elektro but but does not dance - then there is Kompressor!!!

Mitch Murder is probably the only synthwave artist I could really name for sure, I like his stuff sometimes.
That kind of neon sound gets old quick for me though.

Been into this genre since a longer time now. I like the mix between the retro/cyberpunk feels. Somehow I am in my space/sci-fi/cyberpunk obsession again for a few months. It feels really good to listen to this music when playing Elite Dangerous.
I saw Carpenter Brut live a while ago and they were pretty good. They had a guitarist, drummer and the synth player. So it was not just a DJ doing everything.
I got his albums on bandcamp a while ago and I really enjoy them while driving to work in the early morning. It is a good way to wake up.
When I first saw this one with the album cover and the name in my Youtube recommendations I was afraid that it was emo music of some sort, but it is cool synthwave as well. It was a pleasant surprise to me. The Near Dark album is cool as well.

I really dig synthwave, although it's become a bit oversaturated as of late. Too many artists doing the same old, same old without bringing anything new to the genre. Carpenter Brut are my favourite, I think he's got a very unique sound in the framework of synthwave, with a lot of 70's style disco funk and giallo soundtrack elements otherwise quite rare in the genre. And live - I've seen Carpenter Brut twice - they're very good as well, the fact that they're a real band lends the live show a dynamic lacking in most other artists such as Perturbator.

Com Truise - Galactic MeltI signed up for Bandcamp to get this when it came out, and saw him play live twice. Dig the heavy analog sound. Other than that, just a dabbler in the genre. Listen to various mixes, etc. Unit Black Flight is an artist i've followed for a long time, not sure if considered synthwave, more straight up Carpenter-worship, in a good way. Umberto - Confrontations is another good one.

This is one genre/style that I couldn't get into that much. Carpenter Brut is okay, EPs have kool cover art. I heard about 'outrun' music which seems just like a feel/aesthetic within synthwave itself, but I imagined something more tense and driving. Some synthwave practically seems like an 80s re-work of EDM music, especially the heavier stuff and the artists who focus more on the gimmick side of things, not really for me. Anyone have recommendations for some less-orthodox synthwave?

Anyone have recommendations for some less-orthodox synthwave? I think you should give the album I posted in the OP a listen, because I'm right there with you. Most, if not almost ALL, projects in the genre seem far too gimmicky for my taste, but the very very few releases I find that seem more genuine I absolutely love.

Latest release by HDK is really a great one, I mean the post-nuclear one with russian charachters. Highly recommended!

Not sure if this counts as "headband wearing" but I really enjoyed it:

This is some great stuff. I really like it. Hey, thanks! That means a lot to me. I feel that I'm not really a great synthwave composer... I can hammer out neofolk-y dungeon synth quite well, but the synthwave stuff just doesn't come out like it sounds in my head. So it's great to hear someone's enjoying the stuff that does come out right!
