I'm listening to this right now. I was a big fan, as a teen. And now I realize how much the keyboard at the beginning has a proto-DS sound.

I cannot get enough of this - grainy, melancholic, and majestic.

Some of the background cues from Land of the Lost (1970's) remind me of DS. Jimmie Haskell did the soundtrack, and apparently had a Moog back then...

Demon & Wizard - Evil Possessor (1982)
No idea of the context/people behind this, but it's sort of psychadelic-synth-neo-folk-rock from France. Some obvious DS-themes with (at times) extra-buzzy, rich synth sounds, but also somewhat silly guitar breaks.
Tracklist
A1 Prologue A2 Evil Possessor A3 Medieval Holocaust A4 Trip To Hell A5 Faust Revival B1 Cerbere B2 Shakin' The Gates Of Hell B3 Black Witch B4 Mrs Peller B5 Epilogue

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned in this forum before but I present to you: AD&D's "First Quest" album. It dates back to the mid-80s and is basically an adventure for the AD&D system which is found in the liner notes to the album. The music itself isn't sth I personally would label as "good" (let alone great ) but due to it's nature and release it is so dungeon-y, haha. Heck, it basically came out under a dungeon licence. www.discogs.com/de/Various-First-Quest-The-Music/release/2270835 Part of the songs sound more like pressing random stuff on a synthesizer that many of today's "wanna-be old-school DS". Others are at least okay and just classic "80s fantasy keyboard", so to say. Anyway - as a AD&D (D&D) fanboy since my childhood days, I really loved finding out about this and I hope you enjoy it, too. Here is a link to a short review with more information and pics (though I paste some here, too) and a link to a YT song (and playlist): blogonomicon.blogspot.com/2009/02/album-first-quest-music.html Playlist: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQvpV19JTqp6DHw_zhVBeFn9f5Pw1xf-3

The Labyrinth soundtrack is full of little Proto-DS gems. Not only do the aesthetics sorta fit, I think a lot of the compositions at their core do too:
I'd love to hear someone do their own take on this, Hallucination or The Goblin Battle:
