Alright, come on, we obviously have to have a Summoning thread on a dungeon synth board. I'm surprised it isn't here already!

Summoning is the physical gateway between the worlds of dungeon synth and black metal, nobody else comes close. I love that track, btw.
On my blog I used to have a list of albums I thought were definitively dungeon synth, and I always felt bad for not including Summoning. Except for one fortunate EP! Lost Tales might not be super interesting compared to their other epic works, but I was very happy that they had at least one pure ds release.

I completely agree -- I think that some artists have come really close, but no one has ever quite captured that magic like Summoning has. Caladan Brood was EXTREMELY close with Echoes of Battle, and I consider them to be my second favorite band of all time, even with just that one incredible album under their belt. After Caladan Brood comes L'Ordre du Temple, and then Emyn Muil, Ered Wethrin, Kinstrife & Blood and Moongate's Guardian all come to mind as being very good too, I love all of those bands, but I digress. It's entirely possible I just feel very fondly for Summoning because they were the first of this type of music for me (as I expect is the story for many of us), but I really think they tapped into a leyline or something.
Yeah, Lost Tales is great! I know as well that more purely DS Summoning would be absolutely incredible, as they've shown that they can music like that work already, especially when you consider side projects like Mirkwood and Die Verbannten Kinder Evas.
I think that Stronghold in general has to be my favorite Summoning album. I love literally all of their work, but Stronghold had an almost mournful tinge to the epic feeling, and I think that combination is absolutely fantastic. This song in particular comes to mind:

I just finished listening to that album on a drive home moments ago, inspired to listen to it again after you started this thread. When I was first getting into Summoning it was my least favorite album, I think because it seemed like the least flashy, but I find now that it has aged the best and I'd say these days Stronghold is the one I also most often go for.

Mortal Heroes is easily my favorite. Huge sounding album. Lord Lovidicus actually did a cover of this track.

This was the one that initially strangled me into a 3 month long Summoning binge.

Mortal Heroes is easily my favorite. Huge sounding album. Lord Lovidicus actually did a cover of this track. Mortal Heroes is wonderful -- it's easily the most "bombastic" of Summoning's albums. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference that draws me to Stronghold. Mortal Heroes is the soundtrack to setting off on an epic, fantasy world-spanning journey; Stronghold is the soundtrack to a night of reminiscing in a dark, candlelit castle library. Lord Lovidicus did do a great job with the Farewell cover, I completely forgot about that. I think if we're talking about Mortal Heroes, though, I have to give the favorite to Ashen Cold. Those keyboard melodies are otherworldly. And yes! The way that Rhun flows into Long Lost is a perfect way to start the album. Sets the tone very well.

I love Summoning and my favorite records from them are "Let Mortal Heroes..." and "Stronghold" exactly for the same reasons mentioned by @verminaard above: "Let Mortal Heroes..." is their most "accessible" album and the melodies on it are killer and it has "Ashen Cold" on it which is just a gem (and Farewell of course). "Stronghold" is also awesome but more "rough" and dark which is perfect as well: 2 different sides of them!
However I must say that my favorite Summoning song (if there is any because it's in fact impossible to choose) might indeed be... Arcenstone, on Lost Tales. It could sound cheasy to some at first but its atmosphere, to me, is just incredible... and when the violin synth melody enters around the line " Far away, lonely mountains..." it always gives me chills... it has a nostalgia feeling in it which is perfect to my taste!

Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame is my favourite Summoning album as well. I think that Dol Guldur has many good tracks on it as well. I think this one in particular is well made with the song/clip combination.

Years ago, when I first heard Summoning, I thought "man, I wish I could find an album that was just the synth parts from Summoning, without the black metal." I was delighted to discover earlier this year that there's an entire genre of this stuff.
"The Passing of the Grey Company" remains a favorite:

Anyone listen to the Summoning tribute album? I've listened to about half of it so far, and it's amazing.

I haven't listened to it yet. I planned to do that tomorrow or the day after. I didn't have time so far for a proper listen.

I can't really discuss Summoning meaningfully as I am a hopeless fanboy since I got "Minas Morgul" back in '96. It also remains my favourite album but over the years the ranking among the others has changed quite a bit. For example, I used to find "Let Mortal Heroes..." to be the weakest album but presently it's in top 3. Maybe. Also, at some point in time I thought "Dol Guldur" was better than "Minas Morgul" but that's crazy talk. "Khazad Dúm" remains in top tracks, despite the general rank of the album dropping a few notches. I really, really liked the latest album too, I was so happy it was good I almost wept on the first listen, managed to even avoid all the teasers and spoilers for it. It's rare nowadays to jump into an album without some kind of preparation, simply due how easy and necessary on the other hand it is to have a preview on YT or Bandcamp. kuraldgalain: Which one do you mean? The double one?
