I wish they'd do another vinyl run of their early albums, would snap them up.

Just wanted to note thought, rereading Indignant's comment, that implying that Let Mortal Heroes but everything really of even later Summoning isn't at least great is WRONG But I can't be objective on Summoning... Also, one more time I'd say again that Caladan's Brood only album is up there next with Summoning, a golden masterpiece record in its own right , a 10/10. Pure 10/10. And Kinstrife & Blood's only offering is just some centimentres lower next to them...

One of my absolute favorites of all times, my gateway to dungeon synth probably, as for many others. I'd love to have an interview with them, and I'll probably try for the #2 issue. The latest album overwhelmed me completely and I'm struggling to say that it might be, purely musically, their best one (the horror!), and certainly the most mature.

Agreed that Summoning is one of the main gateways into DS and a favorite for many many of us!.. I'd love to read another interview with any(or both) of them, please if you do ask them questions regarding their views, take, influence on the whole DS thing, nice to learn if they're watching the scene at all and what they might have listened.. And keep us updated As for their last album, I like it a lot lot, and the b-sides were great by the way as a lot of people also comment.. But for me personally Stronghold, Let Mortal Heroes... and Dol Goldur are absolute perfected masterpieces in general so most of the rest of their discography is just one step bellow Nice to see people appreciate a lot their last work though, I of course also believe it's underrated, it's just that many people, including me, would prefer from Summoning to give us another gift of a more heavy album like the previous.. Or anything they do, just please tell em to release another one so we all be satisfied

I haven't heard the new Obsequiae album but I didn't hear much of Summoning in the last one, tbh. It's been quite a while, so I might have to listen again.
On that note, I don't think anyone has done 'epic black metal' as well Summoning. Could we say they started it, or solidified the sound? Seems like artists that go this route now are kind of riffing off of the Summoning sound and style. I like Emyn Muil for instance, but it's still pretty much Summoning. Can't really get into Caladan Brood, though. What epic bm bands were they before Summoning? I don't have my dates in order at all, but I now bands like Oath of Cirion, Valar, and Druadan Forest were doing some high fantasy synth bm stuff in the late 90s, early 00s. Was there anything else like Summoning before Stronghold in '99? Feel like they were alone until then.

If you are talking strictly in music style Atmospheric (as in "low tempo") Black Metal I dunno at all... But if in general in Black Metal (not only what's considered Atmospheric BM) and more lyrically and thematically speaking, I guess one can say that EPIC black metal maybe starts with Bathory around "Blood Fire Death" ? Or maybe you could simply trace lots of thematic Lord of the Rings influences in Varg Vikerness even early stuff which is also relevant due to the ambient then DS considered today classics he released? At any point, the turning point I think is around the mid 90s, in 1995 the second release of Summoning "Minas Morgul" with full LotR thematic and imho the start of the whole (music style) "EPIC Atmospheric Black Metal" . And also just some months ahead in 1996 came the equal LEGENDS imho but different style to Summoning "Bal-Sagoth" who were also master crafters in all aspects lyrics, songwriting and epic atmospheres.. Personally if someone asked me how to start chronologically with EPIC BM record(=BM Vocals) as far as we can go back in time that is pure epic swords and sorcery and is a complete masterpiece I'd say "Dol Goldur" (my Summoning gateway btw, remembered it ftom George's Florakis greek Metal Hammer column back then and grabbed it later I think around 2002) and "Starfire Burning..."(my Bal-Sagoth gateway, I gladfully had a tape copy back then in 1996 and eventually watched all after releases of Bal-Sagoth at their current times and bought at release ) .. It's very interesting the intersections of styles that eventually has given us what is considered the essential pre-DS terminology cannon in DS, but also in Epic music in general as well as Epic Metal and Epic Black Metal... And how lots and lots of years of S&S classic books and comics, classic movies, and then RPG games both tabletop and of course in computers have all resulted in this whole deal... I really sometimes think I'm glad I've lived some exciting times in arts and stuff..

Was there anything else like Summoning before Stronghold in '99? Feel like they were alone until then. This one was from 1996, just one year after Minas Morgul: And this one from 1995, same year as Minas Morgul: And Satyricon and Limbonic Art could maybe be considered "epic black metal" by some, but there's a large grey area between that and "symphonic black metal," so much so in fact I don't personally use the former term.

I would like to add that since we are at the "Epic" (however anyone interprets it..) Black Metal discussion, I don't think that anyone could argue Emperor's "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" is as epic in spirit as it could get and even more so...
If for some strange reason (I hope not..) someone wasn't/isn't into Emperor, then just listen for example the legendary Thus Spoke the Nightspirit, Ensorcelled by Khaos and The Wanderer (if you are not into black metal/vocals just listen to the last one but you are missing) and then tell me that this isn't more Dungeon Synth and epic in spirit than really 95% of most DS releases... Legendary album with an atmosphere of the dark..

It needs a long and in-depth argumentation. By now, I can tell you that I don't hear anything in common between Summoning and Obsequiae. About Emperor: yes, I feel the epic in "Anthems..." but quite in a different way. It's more apocalyptic, it gives me the same vibes as the first track from "Nemesis divina".

Stormcrow, on Obsequiae and Summoning I'm with you, I haven't listened yet to "Palms..." but the previous and otherwise great "Aria of Vernal" is not similar to Summoning.. Just noting since I guess I wasn't clear on that previously..

I was actually going to say that I thought In the Nightside Eclipse was the root influence for all this stuff, but then I looked at the year, 1994, and I'm wondering how much influence could they really have in just one year? I really think Minas Morgul was the proper start of this stuff that might be called "epic black metal." But in any case, I would never connect the dots of Anthems to Summoning. Nightside is closer for me in spirit. Anthems brings to mind romantic literature far more than epic literature, feels like it from the 1800s rather than ancient times. But thanks for reminding me about Anthems, it's been a little while since I gave it a spin and it's due for another.

BTW, does anyone of you know which hardware Summoning used for making Minas Morgul drums?

Was there anything else like Summoning before Stronghold in '99? Feel like they were alone until then. An interesting question, but let's narrow it down a bit, how would you define "something like Summoning"? Obviously, there was Die Verbannten Kinder Evas;) Well, I've always heard the term 'epic black metal' in reference to essentially how Summoning sounds. The big slow synth drums, triumphant dungeon synth keys, huge distorted guitars, and the usual shrieks. Caladan Brood, Emyn Muil, bands like that. I don't know if I've see the term used to describe black metal that's just 'epic' as in grand in scope or sound, like how the adjective would plainly be used; it seems like people are using this term specifically to refer to something that I think Summoning may have launched (at least in popularity, if you can call it popular). The reason I asked is because I'm curious is Summoning is the true progenitor of what people are referring to as 'epic black metal', or if there were epic black metal bands before then and they just happened to become the most popular. I think Anthems by Emperor is pretty epic as well, but it's not like the kind of stuff that Summoning influenced.
