I've just order this : www.thomann.de/fr/miditech_minicontrol_32.htmI haven't room enough in my appartment to keep my old and huge keyboard plugged on the computer, all the time, and composing music with Fruity Loops without a keyboard is not exactly convenient ... so, I hope this stuff will help starting making music again, after so many years.

StΓ©phane F., I like the look of this. Fairly affordable, too. Let us know how it works out once you get it.

looks nice! I don't remember any "mini" device featuring knobs and pads!

Make sure to assign those knobs and that slider to some VST parameters. Also see if one of those buttons will affect the midi "control change" number that is sent when you turn them. Because, for example, you could press a button and the knobs control the filter cutoff, resonance, and envelope depth, then you press one of those buttons again and now the knobs are controlling the filter envelope (attack, decay, sustain, release). It might be a pain to setup, but it's worth doing in my opinion if you spend much time manipulating the patch.

Do you find use of the keyboard's Pads in creating DS? have to say i never found any use with them in general...

Could be good for live DS maybe? Trigger your gongs or whatever... I have to say I went for a controller with more keys (61) and fewer knobs.

I've never had a midi controller with pads like that, but I imagine they'd be useful for percussion, probably easier to remember which ones you've assigned each sound to rather than when the drums are just assigned to the keyboard keys.

oh yeah! pads can be useful for the DS too! not only for creating drumbeats but also for background chords, "rhythmic" licks, experimental bass lines etc.
I was thinking about a 61-keys controller too, for I often find myself switching ocatves up & down with my Korg 49.

I got a Nektar Impact GX61 and I love it. Not that I have any aspirations to be a pianist, but I do play everything apart from percussion. Also came with Bitwig 8-track (DAW) which I highly recommend!

Im new to this but I just recently purchased an akai mini mpk and am loving it, great string sounds with the included VST plugins (Hybrid). Are there any decent free/cheap vst keyboards that people enjoy?

I was searching for a cheap keyboard or synth to play "on the fly", without the need of turning on the PC and all the studio devices everytime. Anything to suggest me? Thanks.

I've been experimenting and pushing the boundaries a bit more lately and have struggled to create sounds with anywhere near the depth and evolution you here on, say, Werewulfsblut's 'Sonorous Howls from the Bloodmist'. I find it hard to create the 'drone' effect without the sound ending up 'flat'.
Any advice for creating the sort of dark, evolving dark ambient-esque landscapes such as those heard in Werewulfsblut, Catacombs Enshadowed, crypt of carmilla etc.?

Did you try the "Dark Drones" free library for Kontakt? It's awesome and largely editable.

Rather haunting! Loading them into a sampler and chopping them up a bit may be the way to go it seems.
