Side project alert! This is a single release from my new project Mystal Tree, which is not pure DS - a mix of Dungeon Synth, Fantasy music, JRPG soundtracks and Metal. I was inspired by projects like Arthur, Mitternacht, Moaning Shadows and RaevJager in creating music that deals in the same escapism as DS but without the explicit black metal connection in its ethos. I would love to hear your feedback about this project - the full EP is coming in a few weeks. mystaltree.bandcamp.com/album/borne-under-the-mystal-tree-single

I like this a lot. Really fun to listen to. I can easily imagine these tracks in a SNES or PSX RPG soundtrack. Was surprised when the double bass came in on the first track but I think it worked pretty well, as with the scissor-beat in the second track. I didn't get as much of a nostalgic feel from the second track compared to the first; it's a good song but I hear it more as some kind of electro-prog track which removes some of the transportative elements for me. I'm interested in learning more about the world/mythos/lore it deals with. Hope there's more coming!

Thanks all! Yes, an EP is coming, with 8 tracks (including Borne...) is coming, and will feature some more writing to help flesh out the world. If there is interest I might make a physical release too, mostly because The artwork (by Silvana) and logo (by Bard Algol) are really beautiful and I want more people to see them I like this a lot. Really fuI didn't get as much of a nostalgic feel from the second track compared to the first; it's a good song but I hear it more as some kind of electro-prog track which removes some of the transportative elements for me. Yeah the electro prog thing is very much the Emerson Lake and Palmer by way of JRPG boss battle influence. This was also the first track composed for the project (while Sporestorm! was the most recently finished), and I think the sound has pivoted a lot since I started working on this music back in January.

Really original and enjoyable. Thank you! And I have your most recent Mitternacht release to thank for some inspiration regarding the use of blast beats in this music.

It is very enjoyable and different. It reminds me a lot of some JRPG games. I think your EP will be good if there is more like this, it is really good!

Hi all. Two bits of news - the self titled album is now available on CD. And I’ve got a new single released today giving a preview of the new album alongside covers of songs from Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and Nausicaa. Would love to hear your thoughts on the new material! mystaltree.bandcamp.com/album/the-spores-of-resistance-single

DS cover for a HOMM3 soundtrack? will have to listen for sure! I’m afraid the cover isn’t pure DS sounds, but then again neither is the Mystal Tree project. Regardless I hope you enjoy! I feel the battle themes in HOMM3 had a large impact in how this project shaped itself. So creating this cover felt like s natural choice.

“New Growth”, from Mystal Tree, is available now. Pre-order for the cassette is also available. This one has lyrics and vocals, more prog influence, as well as some west African inspired percussion and 80s new wave influence. Check it out here! mystaltree.bandcamp.com/album/new-growth
