After recent releases by A Letter for Carmilla and Conqueror's Mourn, I'm thinking about the subject, so: How do you feel about the use of piano, specifically acoustic or acoustic-sounding piano VSTs? Of course MIDI piano is pretty common in DS and BM intros, and I think to me the sound of those is so far removed from what a piano actually sounds like that it becomes its own thing. But does acoustic sounding piano automatically take the music to more neoclassical places? For your consideration (also feel free to add projects with live or live-sounding piano too!): Effluvium: effluvium00.bandcamp.com/album/effluvium-2A Letter for Carmilla aletterforcarmilla.bandcamp.com/album/autumnConqueror's Mourn: conquerorsmourn.bandcamp.com/releases

Piano can work well in DS but without the synth there needs to be a strong emphasis on the dungeon atmosphere or feeling in order to remain in the realm of the genre. There does seem to be a distinct differentiation though and perhaps enough to justify their own sub-genre or at least chart.

I’m on a big piano kick lately. I just posted a pretty kool piece over in the non-ds influences thread
Edit: I’ve had both my grandfather and stepfather listen to whispers from carmilla’s tomb recently and they both enjoyed it

I think an acoustic piano can really add a lot to the atmosphere. It really has a very distinct sound with all sorts of powerful emotional associations due to how common and popular it is in virtually every type of music.

I really enjoy the sound. Im listening to the "A letter to Camilla" album, it's definitely got a nice sound to it.

I think it's typically used very well when it's in DS, but I think if its too grand sounding without some kind of 'dungeon' component/atmosphere, like Witherer said, it can easy tread outside of the genre. A Letter for Carmilla is great. Moonless Nights, of course: moonlessnights.bandcamp.com/First track of Lonely Nights is superb. I believe its played on an electronic keyboard, but with weighted keys where you can get varying volume levels. Other tracks that aren't purely piano sound like they're done in a tracker or DAW.

Didn't realize Morketsvind had a YouTube channel with several piano-only sketches.

Beautiful stuff. DS sounds great on real acoustic piano. I bought the Barovian Sketches sheet music from Synth Bard, just got it yesterday. Haven't read sheet music since the beginning of high school. Shouldn't be too hard to pick back up, but it'll likely be a slow start. Wintery ambient piano pieces: unvyer.bandcamp.com/album/unvyer

whoa, I'm liking the "This Mortal Night" album so far. I like the touch of delay on the piano. I wasn't too crazy about the Morketsvind piano album. It was well played and composed, I just don't think the more intricate epic sound that artist generally uses translated well. I will revisit it again at some point though.

I also really enjoyed the This Mortal Night piano album. I must admit, this is actually my first time listening to the artist, and this is a wonderful first impression. Definitely going to have to listen to their other works asap.

I agree! I listened to a few of the first tracks and instantly bought the entire discography, now that it was on sale. Really nice, calm and peaceful stuff, that piano album.
