How could I forget to put that in my list? It's actually one of the few releases I own a physical copy of. I never bothered to really check this one out. I’ve been meaning to actually start a conversation about it. I was always sort of struck by the unique thematic choice, but at the same time it was a choice that I didn’t care for 100%. I think part of my problem is that Egyptian mythology was sort of “demystified” for me a while ago since I went there on vacation at age 12 and had everything made very real and very touristy for me. Here’s an extremely #rare photo from that time. So since that time I guess I’ve never viewed Egypt as particularly magical or mystical. I’m probably one of the few people who met the Anubis release with limited enthusiasm and never really explored it... For me it has a different kind of meaning. You could call it silly (and it kind of is), but this music transports me back to when I was 8-12 and was collecting and playing with a lot of yugioh cards. It may seem a bit random to connect this music to it, but yugioh was a big part of my childhood. Anubis just sounds like some tracks from the yugioh video games and tv series from that time. And besides that I just think the music is really competently executed.

This is my list. It was an explosive year for the genre. Besides this list, many very promising projects made their appearance along 2017, so I'm sure 2018 will bring some excellent DS to us.
Realm of Light by Drachenfeuer The Tyrant's Tower by Einhorn Leech and Wort by Faery Ring When Time Was Naught But Shadow by Oldenhelm Uncanny Underworld by Soporific Sorcery Dra Sad by Elffor Ykcowrebbaj by Valscharuhn Raevult! by RævJäger Goblin Music by Ranseur Gil-Estel by Thangorodrim Chapter 1: The Descent by Alder Deep Drowned Dreams by Elador Return to Lorn by Mantle of Dust Wandering Far by Sequestered Keep Beyond the River Sky by Trogool
I also wanted to mention Nan Morlith, ElixiR, Old Tower, Svarograd, Mausolei, Ephemeral Landscapes, Nebulosa, Nahadoth and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

I agree with a lot of stuff here, but for me, Alba and Deorc Weg stand out as 2 new DS artists that released some very strong material this year.

If so, I'm curious what you think of it, if not you definitely should, I think you'd like it.

When I found "Tar Nu Fuin - íonacht" in your list, Andrew, I couldn't recall anything about it, what it surprised me, since I really like Tar Nu Fuin. But I forgot to check it before publishing my list. Now I've listened to it, and I agree that it should have been added to my post. It's a great album, undoubtely, with a strong 90s DS sound. It's a kind of "pre-recorded" favourite: the material was released this year, but it was made by 1999-2004, as it says in the TNF bandcamp page. I will certainly add it to my list.

Yeah man, I feel like that release never got the attention it deserved. But the combination of the melodies used and the noise, which much of the time sounded like falling rain, provides an engaging listening experience. Plus, I love the narrative about sentient mushrooms traveling through a forest. Also, Morannon: totally reminded me about The Basilisk by Roman Master. Most certainly one of my top picks for this year as well.

Here's what mine looks like so far, not really in order: * Tyrannus - The Warden * Unvyer - Winged Lizard's Cave * Valscharuhn - Ykcowrebbaj * Einhorn - Tyrant's Tower * Ranseur - Goblin Music * Ur Pale - Sea Synth Ensemble * Argonath - The Cattle Raid of Cooley * Mystal Tree - Mystal Tree * Shangri La - Dreamscapes * Hch'xhsh - About how three Walking Mushrooms tried to cross the forest of the Delightful Nightmares, and what happened along the trip. And about how it was raining If I extend it to top 20: * EK001 - Opus I * Alder Deep: Chapter 2 * Tarkin Turfer - Glade Keeper * Xuthal of the Dusk - Demo 2017 * Vagor - Chronicles of Izanoth II * Deathbard - From a Deeper Grave * Synthbard - Ravenloft - The Unofficial Soundtrack * Morannon - Tales of the Silent Castle * Ravenkeeper - Ravenkeeper * Nazgal Dracul - Fall of the Kingdom of Eirfir This was really hard to do. I think this has been a truly great year for Dungeon Synth. EDIT: Replaced Lugubrious by Abyssu with Opus I by EK001, which I had somehow forgotten about. That one is most certainly and firmly in my top 20 for this year. Awesome release, and thanks to Canrith for bringing it to physical release.
