Just ambient.
Here are two great albums by artists of the same name, though totally unrelated to each other.

Love Gas (Wolfgang Voight). I've got the first cd box, but the other one is way too expensive now sadly. The newer album is good. Pole is another good artist, maybe more experimental digital dub than strictly ambient though. His ~scape label put out some interesting stuff, Kit Clayton, Deadbeat, etc. FAX/Peter Kuhlmann/Pete Namlook did some great 90's chillout ambient stuff.
Klaus Schulze, Conrad Schnitzler, and Manuel Gottsching are classic:

I could never get into Gas, and , I really tried though..
Thanx for the recommendations emerge, I'll check them out! (Klaus Schulze is classic stuff of course, must listen for everyone here I believe)
Well, I will go with my favourite one since it is not already posted, a legendary record :
Later Edit : From Within is gold, it features RIP Pete Namlook .. Nice one! I.F.'s song is solid gold too, thanx again! E2-E4 I already knew and enjoyed, totally forgot about it, Conrad is another solid one.. As for Ambient 4 I enjoy a lot more 1 and 2 but he has so many great stuff anyway, it's all subjective! Nice list, now I'm off to check out your italo disco suggestions in the other thread!!

I'm not really sure at this point what counts as purely ambient music anymore; so much mixes with IDM, drone, ~dark~ ambient, etc that it becomes a blur as an overarching quality. crystallogic13 , you beat me to Eno-posting. Probably counts as drone: Probably counts as dark ambient: Probably counts as tape music: Probably counts as a science experiment:

Classic album by Eno, crystallogic13 ! Another Green World is one of my favorites too, which has some ambient parts. Agreed with thekeeper , Ambient is such a broad genre, and gets applied to many different things. That Coil album is great, dark textures and an immersive atmosphere. Another favorite of mine is Legowelt, who has a lot of different aliases. Strange Life and Nightwind are his labels, with a few ambient releases on each. For the gearheads, his studio is ridiculous, it's more of an analog synth museum. Here are a few: The Occult Orientated Crime AlbumSaab Knutson

Damn, lots of awesome-looking stuff I've never heard before. I got to admit, I feel a bit ignorant of this genre. And I've always felt that way. I remember quite a few years ago I made a serious concentrated effort to understand this genre of "ambient" which somehow so much of the music I love falls under, and yet I feel so detached from it at large.
Interestingly enough, crystallogic13, while you really tried to get into Gas but couldn't, I really tried to get into Music for Airports but couldn't. I feel like I could maybe get into it now though. It might've been the album title, like I couldn't get the hollow muzak image out of my head.
Anyways, I agree ambient is super broad, but I'd say it's also super vague (compared to another broad genre like metal), and it's really interesting to me how few albums are quintessentially "ambient," like there's no more specific tag. Here's one I think would qualify for that:

+1 from me too for Ambient being today very very broad.. The line for me where I describe something more as "electronic" simply if it has more tempo or I put it into ambient if it is ..well .. more ambient..
Thanx for the rest of the recs Emerge and TheKeeper, I will get to them soon!
Andrew I hope you give it one more chance, but maybe in a proper mood? Personally the title itself felt very appropriate, like music for airports meaning that sample music that does not distract you from anything yet it is smooth and pleasing to the ear. It feels good for studying or just trying to relax or playing in the background while you have guests and don't want neither silence nor normal music.. And finally the Airport mention gives a sense of being there too, ready to take the plane to your favourite destination for some nice holidays. Just as in DS, in Ambient or any instrumental/no vocals genre, the only lyrics you can get are the song titles/album title, so the connection thankfully for me makes sense! Again, I hope you enjoy it, I believe you will if you are in the certain mood!
Haven thanx for the heads up, it's time I relisten to that , as well as make an attempt to finish the movie (which I think David Lynch doesn't want anything to do with?).. As for the book no time unfortunately, at least I enjoyed a little bit of Dune 2 back in the day, one of the very very few Real Time Strategies I spent some hours on.. (I always prefered turn based ones..)..
Edit: forgot to post another classic imho

This one's a great album. I think I liked this album more than the first Hardangervidda. They're both good, but this one seemed a bit more eclectic, whereas the first kind of blended together at times. The first album has some really beautiful tracks though, especially "Blissful Mountain View". I generally like Ildjarn-Nidhogg more than just Ildjarn.

Playing this tape tonight, interesting vibes, somewhat less new agey than their previous 80’s output.
