here in Italy we have a long time progressive rock tradition... but I think many Italian "proggers" from the 60s and the 70s are largely overrated. I mean, most of them seem to me like poor clones of King Crimson or Jethro Tull... anyway, some of them were really good. Think about Osanna, their album "L'uomo" (with some English lyrics too) or "Ys" from Il Balletto Di Bronzo... great pieces of Italian rock. Another thing I don't like at all: Italian language does not fit rock music, as good as it may be. I found both singers an lyrics quite ridiculous... I don't know why, but it does not match my ear. And even worse is when they sing in English, what a horrible pronounciation!! Ooh, never heard "L'Uomo", the only Osanna I have is "Palepoli" and I love that one. Il Balletto's "Ys" is a top tier classic for sure, along with Muzeo Rosenbach's "Zarathustra" Bought "Zarathustra" yesterday... And it really worths much more than the 5€ paid! Impressive-progressive!!!!!

Every thread needs Kansas, though not all deserve Kansas.

Love this thread. My music is all very influenced by prog rock. Hemispheres is the greatest album of all time.

Love this thread. My music is all very influenced by prog rock It's clear. I listened some days ago to your Canterbury album (not the whole opera since it's really a long one to be honest) and found it extremely balanced between technical skills and DS atmosphere. Do you like the Italian way to prog?

Do you like the Italian way to prog? To be honest, I haven't heard too much Italian prog, but I do like what I've heard. Bands like Le Orme, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, and of course Premiata Forneria Marconi are really good. I'd love to listen to more Italian prog when I have time.

An excellent thread. Due to parental tastes, I was raised on a lot of Prog stuff - I best know British and Italian stuff, but an addition from the 70s (in Japan): Black Ship - by Sadistic Mika Band - leans Jazzy, but an incredible album (tough to find online, but worth the effort). And one I have to mention although it's just outside the 70s - I love Discipline by King Crimson, more avant garde (and new wave inspired) in a lot of ways, but Fripp is really going places with what you can do with rock guitar, and Adrian Belew is just amazing (and with the ever incredible Tony Levin), just great. But, vanilla is it is, Genesis will always be the greatest prog-rock band of that era for me. For an unusual pick from them (kind of) I highly recommend having a listen to Valley Of The Kings that Steve Hackett did on his Genesis Revisited album (the whole album is good) but this one is a neo-70s-style prog banger... I had tickets to see Van Der Graff Gen in a few months as well, but that one's off now as well because of the accursed 'roni.

I love Caravan along with Hatfield and The North, both sound very unique. The one similarity is bass player and vocalist Richard Sinclair whose voice I simply adore and he has a really characterful style of bass playing.
At the weekend I checked out his solo album RSVP from 1994, to be honest I didn't expect to like it and although at times it ventures into smooth jazz it is still a fine listen and I really look forward to getting to know the album better!

So many excellent links here to plunder. My submission is probably too recent, but in 2018 Dee Palmer, keyboardist/arranger who joined Jethro Tull right before Songs From the Wood (and undoubtedly contributed to its masterpiece status), put out a pretty sick solo album. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFAoYrVWMbIVery symphonic, keeps that 70s experimental vibe that's so exciting about all of this stuff.
