Primarily while I'm conjuring evil spells and working on my infernal devices...
But also while reflecting, drawing, reading etc. Like alot of black metal it's best while you're alone. Other people generally ruin the enjoyment of anything haha.

I listen to DS as with other genres at the time it maximizes its usefulness.. For example when I want to headbang I'll put some metal on, when I want to get out and have good times with people or drive I listen to trance, when I want something just to be heard instead of silence I prefer ambient and so on and on. When I want to get a late night or even day tech - space feeling I will listen to early electronic for example.
As such, I listen to DUngeon Synth in two ways: Listening through new stuff/releases of DS, I will usually do something else on my pc, chores, internet browsing, or playing Manalink (Magic The Gathering) and on and on.
BUT my real joy of listening to DS is when I don't want to check new stuff but older findings. Then, like when reading books, playing an oldie rpg, or simply resting on bed or smoking etc, I listen to my huge playlist of all songs I sort and filter through the previous listenings of new/unknown to me stuff.. This "Master" playlist (I posted about it in another thread) is now 2643 or around there songs, all playing in Winamp, shuffle and fade in/out on, makes for a HUGE GREAT Experience.. It's like every little while a totally new adventure will start with the next song.. And ALL the above are favorites heavily filtered, no fillers.. MAkes me happy I went with this approach in my DS music archive, you can guess also why I prefer digital always (today)..

I'm always rather busy, so most of my music listening is general is done at work or traveling to and from various places on the bus or in a car. I typically dig into new releases on weekends. I don't really like multitasking while listening to DS since it's so atmospheric and immersive that it calls for a different state of focus. I'll listen to it at work if I'm doing something monotonous, but if I'm emailing people or working on a project, I kind of fade in and out of music focus. Some of my 'best DS listens' have been when I'm just taking my time walking home, observing my surrounding, taking in everything I'm hearing and seeing.

Now it is most often at night, often by way of meditation or ritual. Last night I listened to Dra Sad with the rain pouring down outside. An excellent combination. Earlier I used to read while listening.

Last week I've been spending my holidays on my hometown, wich is much smaller than the city where I normally live & work. Here I have the chance to walk thorugh the countryside, and I actually do it pretty often at night to visit friends living in the outskirts or just to walk with my dog. It's been a great opportunity to listen to some DS, so I made the most of it. I can't describe how gratifying it is when the only background sounds mixed with the tracks are those coming from the crickets, the wind on the olive trees and the water from the small irrigation canals. Moreover, there are no artificial lights in these paths, so low lighting makes the route even more intimate and cozy. I've been enjoying this environment with Bycirce from Båvingr, Brutus Greenshield's self titled album and Spectre from Arsule. Fantastic experiences, all of them. I can't wait for the next night incursion.

Whenever I need to focus or relax, if I am playing a game that suits DS then I will put that on instead if I don't like the soundtrack. Often I will throw on some headphones and listen to it as I lay in bed and fall asleep.

Lately I have been playing No Mans Sky with my best friend, I think that really meshes well with DS even though its not medieval at all, the vast loneliness of the game really goes well with whatever artist I am listening to. I actually used that game as the visual backdrop while doing the final mix of my own work. The Elder Scrolls games when I was playing those, any Dungeon Crawler which is a given lol, any CRP games I play at the time also. I don't really look for anyone specifically, but I put on auto play on the Dungeon Synth Archives on YouTube or I will come here or look through Bandcamp to find something. Old Tower and Old Sorcery do go well together with No Mans Sky though.

If I'm listening to a new release, I will give it my full focus, so I will be listening to it at night, alone and watching over the window or just reading blogs/looking for music. If it is an album i know by heart, I will use as "an atmosphere enhancer": listening to DS while reading a book. otherwise i'll just use it to focus on work

Also it is a must for when I'm preparing DnD sessions for my group, drawing maps, worldbuilding etc. And of course it's great for reading fantasy too.

These replies are very interesting!
I personally listen to it pretty much whenever I can get some meditative meaning out of it. So while I'm walking through nature, reading books, cleaning my home, maybe even on my commute to work depending on how I'm feeling. Dungeon Synth in my eyes is an experience that transports you elsewhere in your imagination.

I listen to dungeon synth a lot in rotation with other music I listen to (usually while cleaning, working, commuting, etc.), but I listen to dungeon synth almost exclusively when preparing ttrpg games as gm and also while playing. I feel like that's probably not too atypical though. Most of the time I'll make a massive playlist on my computer and queue it up, but I'm also considering setting up a tape deck behind me while we play for maximum atmosphere.

While finishing some details for a couple of songs, I realised how different they sounded not only depending on which device I used to play them (earphones, headphones, speakers), but also based on the environment/situation I was (alone or with people, during daytime or nightime, relaxed or doing something else). I would like to know more about other listeners: How do you usually listen to Dungeon Synth? I normally do it during night, while working-reading-doing whatever stuff on the PC. I like to use headphones for this (I share a flat with two not-DS-listeners), but sometimes I let myself play some songs on a speaker. Sometimes I also listen to it while I'm at the office, but I have to use earphones (no headphones allowed) and the environment keeps me away from the "necessary mood" to truly enjoy it. How do you prefer to listen to Dungeon Synth? When I enjoy it the most is when I'm alone during night. Listening to it in the countryside is a great experience, but is not easy for me get out of the city, so an intimate space with low lighting feels fitting as well. Sometimes I also like to can grab a book of short stories (preferably terror, of course) for the listening, or even play some nostalgic adventure videogame. Great question! Usually I'll listen to DS whenever I wish; walking home/riding my bike is always fun, as well as when I'm reading a book (preferably fantasy). I'll also listen when I'm at school or in-between classes. My ideal DS listening situation is one of two ways: 1. At home, at night when it's raining with a cup of tea and a good book 2. Walking through a graveyard (there's two near my house) either during the morning or twilight hour. Twilight is especially beautiful, especially on a nice day. Very peaceful and spooky in a goofy way!

Been listening to the recently issued Lamentation – Grabens Symphonie 2CD in my truck and I've been really pleased at how well it has worked in this enviroment.

My favorite way by far is to listen to it while driving. It's rainy and overcast a lot during the winter here, and makes for perfect atmosphere.
