a classic from my youth... sounds pretty good at 0.75 speed too. hell yeah, thanks for posting this. i really love this soundtrack and it's extremely dungeon synth-y to me. in fact, this soundtrack was one of the first things i thought of when i first heard dungeon synth, it reminds me of Gothmog in particular. Sure thing! I'll re-listen to Gothmog, it's been awhile. The original Golden Axe soundtrack is pretty nice too, not sure if it's been posted already:

There was a video game music festival in Helsinki, Finland last Saturday - unimaginatively named Helsinki Game Music Festival. I missed the first couple of performers due to conflicting schedules, but saw the last three performers on the main stage. The young pianist Ramon Van Engelehoven performed beautiful solo piano arrangements of some classic games; Meine Meinung from Japan performed acoustic renditions with two guitars, bass and flute/vocals; and finally, the main performer Game Music Collective performed a massive, about two hours long set of video game music from the 90's to this day. GMC is an orchestra of some 20 performers, this time joined by a male choir, and their arrangements and performance are truly magical. The highlights were one composition from Monkey Island, and another one from Secret Of Mana.

Somehow upon reading the "Festival" word, my mind went up straight to the Demoscene parties and such. And I think we've never had a mention on this forum in case someone is unaware, so I hope if you have some time , check up this (coding and audiovisual) artform :
My favourite one, back from 2000, I was BLOWN when I see it, it's a 64 Kilobyte executable. 64K !!!!! Just think of this.. Still a legendary demo both for its achievements and as art too :

This is one of my favorite tracks from a video game.. I still remember the first time I heard it. The atmosphere it gives off takes me to a really special serene place.

Could this perhaps be considered an early example of Dungeon Synth?
It's such a compelling little tune. I can listen to it for hours on repeat - and often did, as a child, staring at the screen with the volume turned low to avoid detection by parents

Reviving this thread... I grew up on C64 and Amiga games (ok, SNES and Sega Genesis joined, too) and still listen to certain songs and themes. Be it in their original form or as remixes. I try to keep it short and "just" come up with a few of the ones which had a special impact on me:
My all time fave tune is the intro theme from "X-Out", utterly hymnic and just brilliant:
Also mindblowing and still getting constant pays: The Last Ninja 2
Another absolute classic: Turrican I and II
And finally touching proto DS so to say: "Shadow of the Beast"....

While this track is not DS related, I would say it's ambiental enough to relate it to this thread.
If you have played Starcraft, you're familiar with this zerg idea of the alien, massive and constantly mutating swarn. And, within it, the figure of the Queen of Blades as an incomprehensible and no longer human being with tainted memories. And I know may of you will prefer previous chapters of the saga over this one. But regarding music, I think this piece is one of the best produced by Blizzard. It absolutely represents the idea of the Zerg I described. It just fits so perfectly the theme and the idea. What you think?

I've been a fan of point and click adventure games for as long as I can remember, but I've never been a fan of Myst-style logic machinery type puzzles. I remember I really wanted to play it when I was a kid and it was the new phenomenon, but my computer couldn't run it. I tried playing it a few times over the years, but yeah I wasn't into those kind of puzzles. Anyways, lately I've been listening to the soundtrack and it's really great. Makes me want to try playing it again because the lore and atmosphere of the game seems so unique and immersive, but I can't decide between the original for that authentic 1993 experience or realMyst for having freedom of movement and therefore maybe a more immersive experience. +1000 to Andrew's post... Totally different, but along with Deus Ex (original) soundtrack , Myst's soundtrack is my favourite VGM .. Myst 1 is the only I've finished from all in the series (1-5 + Uru (+RealMyst)) but I remember seeing it in awe from baaaack at the day CD ROMS were a huge novelty along with "multimedia" etc. Its OST is so good years later while studying for my M.Sc. it was the most helpful and mind relaxing thing to listn.. Realmyst has some extra tracks too, but I've listened to the OST , not played the game.. Original Myst I think even now should be playable if after trying Realmyst you prefer the classic one.. But Realmyst has another world I think so it pays off I guess.. Personally I have Riven on my to finish list for years now and maybe I'll try it soon again! Needless to say what a great classic game it is with huuuuuuuuge (ambient and solitary) atmoshperes!! To sum it up, the whole tracklist of the OST of Myst is one by one great and a personal favourite , excellent choice!!
