Out of these three Arturia has in my opinion the nicest feeling keybed. Arturia is usually great at integration too so I'd vote Minilab. Akai is pretty close but the Alesis felt very flimsy. But in this category (small keyboard, a few knobs/pads) I would probably go forΒ Novation Launchkey Mini MK3 unless you need some kind of integration it doesn't offer. Novation stuff is just great. For a little bit more you could getΒ Novation Launchkey 49 Mk2 or Arturia Keylab Essential 49 which both would be huge upgrades over the mini ones and with 49 keys aren't huge (full size is 88 keys) The bottom line is you can make do with anything. It's about preferences and priorities. Thank you, really appreciate the help. I know the differences are really minor and it really comes down to the feel of the keys, build quality and integration with Reaper. I'll definitely check the Novation launckey. Happy to help. Arturia is often the only company to support Reaper right off the bat. I have a larger Novation and I had to get a custom script to properly integrate it into Reaper. Gladly someone already wrote a good one. The good news is Reaper is so customizeable you can make anything work.

Here's an example of exactly that which is happening for me right now. I'm curious how to build a custom drumkit where each note on my midi keyboard can trigger a different track/instrument/sample, googled it, searched for a bit, and here's the solution. A bit arcane and unintuitive, but with Reaper you can always assume there's some way to accomplish what you're trying to do, and you can discover it with just a bit of elbow grease. There's probably an even more elegant solution too (if so, somebody let me know).

You can probably compile a kit of samples and launch them into separate tracks with a good sampler plugin and routing. I'd be surprised if some better samplers didn't have that functionality since it's very essential for beatmakers and a keyboard isn't technically any different than a launcher with pads. It's just midi messages.

I'm more interested in triggering different VSTs for now, but I'd be interested if somebody has a preferred (free) plugin for building custom drumkits with samples.

Ah I see. That's a different story then. In that case I think what you posted should be the way to go.

I used to use fl studio, but then I tried reaper...and I definitely went for it. I compose using musescore, then I import the midi file in reaper. I find it extremely easy to use and you can find everything you need by simply googling it.

Iβve been quite happy on Cubase Elements for some time. Mainly running a Korg Monologue with the help of some VSTs and reverb plug-ins. I find it streamlined enough and easy to use. Well worth the cost, imo.

I'm a Studio One user here. I use it primarily for my metal project but it's good for electronic and synth work as well.
I still have FL Studio but I rarely use it these days - the arrangement and step sequencer stuff is great for this kind of music but those features are now available in most DAWS.
A long time ago I used to use ModPlug Tracker and, before that, Fast Tracker 2 - maybe I should try running those again for that true 90s feel.

I'm using Ableton Live Lite. This is a version I got for free and I am limited to 8 tracks. This is not a problem, I even find that it adds a constraint of composition and that forces me to go to the essentials.
My next purchase: a MIDI keyboard because for the moment I am compose with the computer keyboard.

The music maker thing in Warioware DIY on the Nintendo DS Wow really? That is super unique, I'll be sure to check it out. I've always thought about trying the Korg DS program, but never thought about any other games that can do something similar.

I've always thought about trying the Korg DS program, but never thought about any other games that can do something similar. Haven't release anything recorded that way yet yet but on my next album for sure. It's basically glorified Mariopaint. Very basic with some nice DS-suitable, very artificial, sampled instruments. So far I tried to make DS but it turned out more like digital toy grindcore so might start yet another sideproject for that also been using vintage 68k mac music software like SoundEdit, Super Studio Session, Turbosynth and Deluxe Music, running on an emulated Mac Plus. Some ridiculously user-unfriendly music interfaces but I'm getting some nice results the Korg DS-10 is incredible, highly recommended. 2nd hand DS/DSi are the cheapest right now they probably ever will be, you can probably find the Korg cartridge for a decent price easily, or better still you can get an R4 Gold card for a few Β£ on aliexpress and load a SD card up with homebrew NDS software and pirate copies of DS-10 etc (more save slots that way for one thing.)

Nice, thank you for the info. Sounds like some interesting projects for sure. My DS is unfortunately across the country when I rushed to get home cause of Covid, but as you say I might consider picking up another one to play around with anyway. The R4 gold card is something I may have to look into in the future.
