Yes agreed, unless your copy of Logic is somehow flawed, I would say it’s pretty superior to Audacity.

Would anyone recommend a good pack of VST instruments? I'd like to add some better quality medieval VSTs to my pool to get a more coherent sound among compositions. I've seen some of them, but I can't afford a 250€ pack. Do anyone know of a cheaper and recommended one?

I was looking for a "ghironda" (I think it's called hurdy-gurdy, in english) but found no free/cheap stuff. Just one but not working. Try that Vst4free.com, maybe something will come out.

Everything I've been using comes from there, but there are some instruments I just can't find. Right now I'm thinking of a buisine, which i'd love to use in some of the songs I'm working on.

Hoping to start my dungeon synth project sometime this year. One thing I'm still confused on is using someone else's artwork as your release's cover art. For example, if I wanted to use artwork from the 1800's or early 1900's, do I need to contact someone and get their permission first or can I just use it without permission since the artist is long dead? Also, this is probably a dumb question and basic knowledge to everyone on here, but how do you get that lo-fi/"crackle and pop" sound using a DAW? I don't want my synths to sound like complete shit where you can't make anything out, but I also don't want a crystal clear production sound. I'm looking for a haunting and eerie sound to my synths. This is a good example of what I'm looking for: abholos.bandcamp.com/track/slumber-of-the-ancientsIt's clean enough where you can make everything out, but still has that sound to it that makes you feel like this was recorded in a desolate and abandoned castle.

If your are using cubase you have a built-in vst called "granular" which add these crackles. About your first question, i think you are allowed to use an art without permission after 100 years.

You could try Izotope Vinyl www.izotope.com/en/products/create-and-design/vinyl.htmlCheck the copyright law in your own country, in the UK it is 70 years after the death of the creator. Wikimedia is a great source of hi res paintings!

I've seen some of them, but I can't afford a 250€ pack. Do anyone know of a cheaper and recommended one? First would be to download the Versilian Community Sample Library, which includes (multiple) harpsichords, (two) organs, SATB baroque recorders, and a psaltery, in addition to an excellent selection of other interesting instruments. Secondly, you might want to check out DSK Music's VSTs, of which the World StringZ would be of most use to you. Thirdly, if you're willing to spend at least a little bit of money, Digital Sound Factory offers a selection of older sample libraries, including the Emu Proteus 3 'World', which includes a wide variety of ethnic instruments - ney flutes, celtic harps, bagpipes, didjeridoos - and, while this may not match exactly "medieval VSTs," it does offer you quite a variety of instruments, of which many will be medieval, if not earlier.
These would be your best options, to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks for this, especially VCSL. For soundfont users, here's a direct link: github.com/sgossner/VCSL/releases/Hope to give that a try tonight... the "ocean drum" sounds promising!

Hi guys! I started my DS project some weeks ago, and this thread was REALLY helpful. I'll drop my few recomendations on the topic, despite I'm also a newcomer, but nevermind I went on with FL Studio and I'm very pleased with the software. I find it very easy to use and to learn from scratch. It is all very intuitive and the UX/UI is very well designed. For plugins, on the first song I made (which is here btw gundabad.bandcamp.com/releases) I used the default included instruments and plugins, with some tweeks on the samples to achieve the desired sounds. For the second song (which is not online yet) I used some instruments from VCSL, really good quality material there, so I highly recomend to pick that up! I also found this pair of videos very useful, from where I learned about some instruments I'm still playing with and learning how to use them. The guy of the channel has also a video about free chiptune instruments/plugins. I highly recomend that one if you are into CT, but this is not the topic now so PART 1 --> Best Free Orchestral VSTs (2018) - Realistic instrumentsPART 2 --> Best FREE Realistic Instrument VST/AU Plugins For Windows & Mac (2019)
Thank you for all the previous posts, really helped me starting up!

I've used Dexed (hilariously great) for my first mini, and a bunch of SNES/SG/PS1 soundfonts (got them here) for the second one.

a friend of mine is going to start his own DS thing, and he's looking for a free DAW. Since I've been always hanging to Mixcfrat (quite cheap, but not free), I would like to ask you for suggested stuff. Maybe you know a free DAW that has a good bunch of native softsynths as well? thanks a lot.

I started a thread not too long ago with a similar question, maybe you can find some good answers there: dungeonsynth.proboards.com/thread/640/daw-use-dungeon-synth-project
