This is the goriest sword and sorcery film I know of: Just watched this with my bf. The soundtrack is pretty awesome. The story was a bit vague at the beginning, but it got better later on. It was pretty enjoyable, with all those cheesy special effects. I love that a lot in movies like that.

Definitely "Subspecies." It's a vampire horror film from the people who released the Puppet Master movies, and it's got some seriously amazing dungeon vibes. It was shot on location in old Romanian castles, and the score sounds like Dungeon Synth. It's pretty much perfect.

The atmosphere of some of the classic Vincent Price movies like Witchfinder General and The Masque of the Red Death reminds me a bit of DS on reflection.
Tombs of the Blind Dead is one of those extremely moody horror films with lots of great atmosphere. It's objectively not a great film but it is a memorable one.
And I think the film Nightbreed generates the dark mythical fantasy atmosphere that some DS has.

I still have not seen the director's cut of Nightbreed, still not out on blu ray down here in Australia (hopefully someone corrects me) but can't wait -also Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions is unreal!Plus I agree Vincent of course and others like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing lurk in everyone's subconscious when it comes to ds

The music of the silent version of Nosferatu is so lovely. Very Dungeon synthy, before it was cool.

Absolutely, the original Hans Erdmann soundtrack is wonderful. It's also great that nowadays we are able to attend cinema concerts of these classics, so we can get a feeling of how people experienced cinema 90+ years ago In Amsterdam we have a movie museum where from time to time they are screening silent movies complete with Live music. The best I've seen so far are Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922), Die Niebelungen: Siegfried (1924), Metropolis (1927), and The Phantom of the Opera (1925). Some musicians create their own interpretation of the score and others play the originals, but either way it's an impressive experience!

Oh really? I didn't know that it existed. What is the name of the museum? I study in Amsterdam and my boyfriend lives there, I think it would be cool to visit it some day.

It's called EYE Filmmuseum, and it's located at IJpromenade 1 in a very modern looking white building. Can't be missed It's not a museum in the sense that they have all kinds of old movie memorabilia displayed or something, but apart from screenings of old and new movies they always have multiple exhibitions per year. So for example this year they will have a Martin Scorsese exhibition and in the past they had one for Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg as well, which were both pretty cool. They also handle movie restorations and have one of the biggest collections of old film reels. And one further tip: there will be a Nosferatu screening in Den-Haag (Paard van Troje) on May 6, complete with orchestra!

Oh I have been to the Eye with the Stanley Kubrick exhibition a few years ago. It was supercool, I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey there as well. Seems that I have to keep an eye (no pun intended) to their program a bit more. Thanks for the tip! And that sounds superlovely, I will keep that in mind.

Hello. Krull is one of my favorites. And what do you guys think of Willow ? In my oppinion it was great. Krull is amazing for sure and it's movies like this that also make me nostalgic about the age where practical effects were used instead of the cgi which floods our screens nowadays... Willow I must have seen once i guess, but if I did it's so long ago I can't really remember anything about it. Need to watch that one again soon.

Let's not forget this classic, we can't call this a Dungeon Synth forum without discussing THE DUNGEONMASTER. I can't decide if it's amazing or absolutely terrible. W.A.S.P. makes a special appearance in this movie as well.
Horror movie nerd fact: If you watch the original Troll (not the terrible sequel everyone talks about) you can see a promo poster for this movie hanging up in one of the kids' rooms. The first Troll is actually a decent fantasy/horror movie. And the dad in the movie is named Harry Potter, so there's that. JK Rowling denies ripping it off, but I'm suspicious.
ICE MONSTERS OF DOOM!!!
