I rewatched Return to Oz last night (I returned to Return to Oz...), and it definitely needs revisiting if you haven't seen it since you were a kid. It holds up really well and it's actually a fantastic movie. Not nearly as creepy as I remember it, but the Wheelers and Mombi's hall of heads are all pretty strange. The very first scene with the Wheelers is actually kind of scary, but they're mostly just strange after that (once you realize that they have masks on the top of their heads). Great pacing, Dorothy's character in this is extremely resilient ("it can't be helped now"), the supporting characters are interesting, and the everything looks amazing. Some really good puppetry and costumes. It's a shame it did so poorly at the time, but I can understand how this would scare kids. a very good one!!! I rewatched it recently, and it's still a nice fantasy movie in the typical 80s style. Some bones-chilling scenes, too! Ha! I remember I watched this at the cinema at the point where I needed glasses but, hadn't had an eye test or anything... as a result it was a confusing haze... will have to rewatch it and actually see what's going on...

Gilliam's "Jabberwocky" is fun, and really captures a grim Medieval atmosphere in a way that's almost at odds with the sub-python humour. Can't find right now but there are some great interviews with him about it, interesting stuff like they'd originally planned to make the soundtrack entirely using authentic medieval music but people didn't get it so they ended up adding deliberately cheesy library music.

Hehe I've not seen it yet (Legend 1985) but the sample from Summoning's classic "Farewell" song (Let Mortal Heroes) in the end Edit: oops from rapidness, the song is another CLASSIC, "A Distant Flame Before The Sun" -the last one of the great "Stronghold" album ("... through dreams , I influence mankind") is taken from there, so definitely interested!!

This one is on my watchlist: oh! this is one-of-a-kind movie! If I remeber correctly, this was a Disney production, and that's curious because the movie itself is quite dark and somehow monolithic...to say, not what we use to call a typical children-oriented movie! I don't remember Dragonslayer as a true masterpiece, to be honest, but I recommend a watch anyway.

Some silent movies got already mentiond in this discussion. Because of their aesthetics I'd add 'Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens'(1922), 'HΓ€xan'(1922) and 'Das Niebelungenlied'(1924) to the list of kvlt movies.

Oh man I love the Storyteller. It used to be on Netflix, but now it's on Amazon Prime (free if you have a Prime account). Such a great series. Henson also did another similar series about Greek myths, definitely check it out, it's on Amazon too.

I always loved the flying broomsticks sequence on Haxan! Also "The Phantom Carriage" (1921) has some creepy sequences though being not an horror movie...and nice SFX for its age, too!

Just watched 'The Wicker Man' from 1973 last weekend and think this one would fit into the list somehow. The general topos of a pagan cult that secretly still exists in mordern times is a very cool idea. The whole movie is full of symbolism and small details you may miss while you watch it the first time. It left me behind thinking a lot about what its message may be. (In a positive way) Big recommendation!

Good one, I have been meaning to watch this ever since I saw Midsommar.

"The Wicker Man" would fit for one more reason, it hugely inspired Agalloch, especially "The White" EP - a lot of samples therefrom, but it's not limited to this EP only. And Agalloch has some unmistakably DS ambience.
