Hi everbody, Here is my first ever music release of any kind, this short dungeon synth/fantasy album follows a basic story over the course of six tracks. It is free to download if anybody would like and I would love any feedback people have on it. If anybody has any questions about my process or anything at all then please reply as I would love to discuss it. jorvvik.bandcamp.com/album/jorvvik

Good stuff, very analog sound yet still sounds pretty dungeony. The composition also is pretty unique, hard to put a finger on, but definitely has a nice balance of minimalism and sophistication. I'd be interested to know what instruments you used.

The only thing I used for every single sound and effect was the DSI Prophet Rev2, I’ve always liked the idea of doing a full album using just one synth so thought I would try it with this one. All the sounds I used were my own patches too, i will be releasing the patch bank for free download at some point so I will put it up on here.

As a big fan of analog synths in my DS, this was right up my alley. I have to admit, I found Daybreak a bit jazzy and synthpop-y for my taste, and Market Square a bit pastoral - but then Through The Fog/Peaceful Patrol/Dark Cavern is an excellent run of tunes, which really make the record. I also salute the discipline and experiment of committing to just sticking to one piece of technology for the whole recording!

Yeah I can see what you mean with the first two tracks and I agree them three tracks feel like the strongest to me. I just tried to keep it as simple as possible but still trying to keep a nice vibe. I think next time I will get a bit more experimental and use more instruments etc. One of the reasons I only used the Rev2 is because I just got it in December and have been absolutely loving it. It’s a joy to make sounds on and play around with. The effects aren’t great but definitely useable. Really appreciate the feedback and thanks for listening. Also I just realised it says you have to pay a minimum amount which I didn’t realise so I will stick some codes up on here later when I’m home on my computer.

Hey Jorvvik, you didn't need to create codes, when an album is NYP(=Name Your Price) as you set it, when soumeone "buys" it, he can just fill "0" on the price and get it !! Great of you though that you took the extra mile to create some code just in case.. Either way, I put it already on my to listen list and will return asap with thoughts n stuff

Never messed with any DSI synths myself, but I know they're a big deal. And I'm glad you said that you made the patches, I actually really wanted to ask you about that, but didn't want it to seem like I was pressuring you to start doing so if you weren't. But I know how much work that takes making all your own patches and I think you did a really great job. There were a few moments there were I was thinking "for sure this must be a preset," and "for sure this must be a rompler patch." Impressive work coaxing out the dungeon sound.

I absolutely love making patches. I have been making my own sounds on various synths for years now. I created my own bank for the Nord Lead A1 last year and currently have 39 sounds finished on the Rev2. To be honest I feel like I’m barely scratching the surface with this machine though, it’s incredibly deep. I love making flute/wind type sounds and having envelope 3 assigned to noise so you get the blowing sound at the start. I think at some point I will get a rompler and try make some more traditional sounding DS but at the moment I have the Prophet so I tried to make what I could with it.

I really liked this release. Dungeon Synth is a genre that very easily turns into a pastiche of itself. This was very original and fresh but not in a "let's make this music something that it is not by force" kind of awkward way. Great stuff

I think with me still fairly new to the genre it meant I wasn’t influenced massively by other stuff. I just went with what I thought sounded nice but fit the mood I was going for. I have already started working on my next release and am going to go for a darker feel on this one.

I have already started working on my next release and am going to go for a darker feel on this one. To me this is a great position to work from. I've made all sorts of music and I often feel like I come up with the best ideas when I'm new to a genre and haven't done it before. In the end it's best to just go with the flow, not care about any genres or standards and see what comes of it. I appreciate this sort of creative work. The "oh I don't think this idea fits the genre so let's dismiss it" crowd is something I will probably never understand. There's of course limits to everything and pushing it too far it either becomes something unrelated (this is fine of course) or a joke (this is not). I think you nailed the sweet spot of sounding original without sounding so far out it becomes silly. It's undeniably dungeon synth and to me this sort of analog sounding stuff is extremely welcome. I love analog synthesizers. Very interested to hear how the new one comes out!
