Hey all, I wanted to have a place where people can share drafts/demos/unfinished work. This is one of my favorite things about the FB DS group, and I would love to see it happening here, where posts don't disappear quite so often. I'll start - this is a piece very different in character from what I do with Nahadoth. Inspired by more fast paced DS and other synth music like RævJäger and that week I spent with Arthur's Pagan Sun's Fire in my car CD player, I expect this will become a different project at some point. Folks on FB mentioned that the drums are too quiet, but does anyone have other feedback about the composition or mix? soundcloud.com/user-46022715/borne-under-the-mystal-tree

Very unexpected move from you, but I totally like this light atmoshere, leitmotif and tempo. It sounds very independent like Nobuo Uematsu FF themes. Great! This your side project will one of my the most looking forward things 2017.

Other than the drums, I see no potential problems. Everything here is very dynamic, which I love. I would say to be careful using a lot of fast lines with that reverb guitar over those kinds of synths - it could get very muddy very fast, but it sounds fine here from what I'm hearing!

Good idea for the thread. I'm personally as well really glad to read people's feedback about my unfinished works.
About your track :
Sounds good, has somehow a Japanese (or J-RPG) feeling in itself. Brings back the memories of countless hours spent playing old Japanese RPGs. Really bright atmosphere. The sun and the blue skies. I like it very much

Great idea for a thread! I figure I'll contribute something. Here's something I've been toying with for maybe a week now, just a rough idea for an intro to a much longer track, as I tend to like to do. It might see the light of day as something, it might not -- let me know what you think. In particular: does it sound too busy toward the end? I think it's blending alright but I'd like second opinions. Can you tell I was listening to Mortiis? soundcloud.com/verminaard/demo2017/s-xl9lm

I like how it starts, pretty calming in the beginning and that it builds up to something more epic. I only think some drumrolls (the faster ones) sound a bit off.

Thanks for the reply! About the drum rolls, so it's an issue of timing? Do you think it might be to do with the reverb? Maybe I should use a different type of reverb on the rolls than the single snare hits.

I think it has more to do with the timing, for me it mismatches the melodylines a bit. Perhaps it helps if you use them less often, so it has more impact. I still notice that I am terrible at describing it in English. So I hope it is not to vague.

Has the same dungeon feel. Very good work To me it does not sound too busy. I like it all the way.

I actually like the effect the drum rolls have, too! I really like the crescendo at the end. There's a definite payoff for listening through the song, which I always enjoy. The layering is really cool, and the counter melodies are not too busy. Very well done from where I'm standing.

I don't think it sounds too busy - per your followup question, I _do_ think the problem is the reverb on the snare rolls, as it kinda softens the punch from them. I wouldn't get rid of it completely, but when the rolls first enter, they have a similar sonic profile as the cymbal crashes, and I think adjusting the EQ/Verb of both might be a good way to get a better balance. I notice it a lot less around 2:45 when the full percussion pattern comes in, however.

I'd be interested to hear what you all think of this - I made it very quickly using the Garageband app. 100% of the sounds are vocal samples. Editing is in fact a huge pain on that app, so it's a little sloppy - but I've made a goal to create some samples of my own to use in my various work, and this is the first I've done along those lines. soundcloud.com/user-46022715/thousand-voice-lament

It sounds very futuristic. And I love the flute that starts around 1 minute.

Thanks - had to sing a really long note for that sample, so I'm glad it came out flute-like.

Here's some unfinished stuff. I have a really bad tendency to start a project without finishing it. This is my most recent one, from probably around two years ago. The idea was to make a dungeon synth album that was also a Neverwinter Nights "hakpak," meaning that they would be songs that would play in-game that can be used in the toolset by module creators. There's no chance they'd be used in that way since NWN module creation is pretty much dead, but I thought it would be like a fun honorary nostalgic nod to that type of thing. I couldn't sustain the motivation, but I got a few good tracks out of it. Wizard's TowerMysterious Cave
