Not bad! I liked the presentation and mood of your release. The only remark is that in some moments I would have brought the flute a little more to the first plan.
Thank you v much! That's really interesting, what you say about the flute! I had experimented with this in the final mix, but sort of decided upon keeping the flute on the same level as the synth (apart from a couple of smaller, stand-alone sessions), but I have since wondered about this. I use synthesised and live flutes; I find it more difficult to get the mix right with the live wind instruments. Thanks for listening!

If you can't level your live instruments out with compression & transient processors then try to blend the synth flutes/ samples in with your live flutes together as layers. It will help make it more even, full & lush.

Yeah, the first track on my EP is where I'm using the most live flute, and I went back and forth on whether or not to make it the lead; in the end I decided to keep it more in the background. Interesting to see what people like/prefer. I may do another mix at some point. Thanks for your thoughts!

Thank you again to everyone for listening to my first EP, and for your really useful feedback. I have recently finished my second EP, and will provide a link to the Chambers soon!

Have section where the flute takes the lead then have sections when it's all layered together. I hear both sides to that in a lot of Dungeon Synth I've been listening to lately. I like your music too, a different take on a genre is always good in my opinion.

Hi all, I have just released my second EP, Of Wind and Stone, if you're interested. astrangerleadsthedance.bandcamp.com/album/of-wind-and-stoneI use digital drums a lot more on this one, performed on a very minimal set. My background is drumming in grindcore and art rock bands; I wanted to try to combine frenetic drumming with a dungeon synth sound. I hope you like it. Cheers,

Definitely! Structuring and mixing is as much an art form as anything else, isn't it?! Thanks for the kind words! Yes it is! It's really interesting to learn you were in grindcore bands, I never really got into that too much. It's just the metalheads that usually like Dungeon Synth are usually Black Metal fans. First time I've heard someone into both but I did see that hardcore band with dungeon synth art posted in a thread on here so maybe DS has a much bigger reach than I think.
I gave your new tape a listen & I liked how different it was while having an old school feel to it. Having those grindcore drums seemed to sound better to me on your last track where they weren't trying to go so grindcore like the previous track lol but the last track had more of an industrial noise feel to it.

Thanks for listening to it, man! Yeah, I get that due to the history of the genre. I actually can't remember how I came across DS for the first time. I think I just discovered it through listening to a certain mixture of stuff on bandcamp and Youtube. I'm being pretty mischievous with the drums on this new one, especially on the second track haha. I quite like drumming that becomes a kind of wall of white noise or pure texture, so that's what I was going for there (except for the straight beat on the intro and outro); it definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea. I'm really glad you like the last track, it's become my personal favourite of late. Thanks again for engaging with my music, it means a lot.

Yeah I wasn't trying to single you out or anything, I just thought it was different and interesting to hear someone come from a gore grind background who also likes dungeons synth. I was never into gore grind myself but I'm not judging, was more curious than anything else.
Yeah I actually could tell what you were going for, it felt like you were shaping your double bass drums in an envelope manner. Maybe an lfo would help reinforce that or just simply using velocity in a similar manner, felt like you were going for this type of effect on top of making it feel military and dark.
You're welcome man, thanks for putting out interesting music!

Not at all! Actually, it's more accurate to say that my drumming style is more from noise rock and art rock. I actually use a single pedal, playing fast doubles on that, so I'm not necessarily trying to go too much for the deep grind sound. Plus I essentially play all of my drums for DS on a toy drum set, v simple midi pads, just because it's what I have around and because it fits pretty well with what I'm trying to achieve. I've always been the kind of drummer who cares more about playing than about genre, I guess. You miss and gain things with that approach. I also play jazz but I dont know as much as real deep jazz fans, but I try to know enough and bring something new along the way. I've been thinking a lot about this recently, in terms of being an artist of any sort... where can I find your music, by the way? Would love to check it out

But that's very interesting to hear you come from such a different background with noise & math rock, not that I'm very well versed in DS yet but still haven't met someone like you. They mostly come from black metal and do DS as well.
I don't have any music out yet, I'm still making it while I'm learning. But I will definitely post it at some point.
