Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm guessing there are some experienced people here who might be able to help me out. There's a synth or sample which I hear all the time in some types of dungeon synth - but I have no idea what it's called or how to get it!
I went through my entire GM sound banks and couldn't find anything that really matched. It's too soft to be a traditional mallet, too much decay to be a pad... it reminds me of sounds I used to hear in MODs from the late 90s, but that's not helping me identify it.
What's the name for this sort of thing?

The first one sounds like a typical synth bell, xylophon or maybe even an organ to me. Quite 90's RPG indeed. Something in the ballpark could be made with qiute simply using a square wave on a synth. Go low on the frequency to get the soft sound, maybe some resonance. Short attack, and decay, release and sustain to taste. The second example sounds like a distorted piano with reverb. Would use some saw wave/pulse wave modification and more high frequencies on a synth to get a more agressive sound like that.
And then there is EQ, reverb, echo and the rest of the context.

Thanks for the reply! Gotta admit I'm trying this suggestion though and I can't get anywhere close to that first sound. It's closer with a sine wave than with a square but nowhere near. I can tell there's some vibrato in there as well but that only gets me part-way there For what it's worth I asked the composer of the first piece and he said it would have been from a Casio CZ 5000 - that complicates matters because it's not the traditional subtractive synth method. Still, the Casio synth I have - VirtualCZ - has some great sounds, so that's something! Open to any more suggestions.

Ah, chasing the exact patch could turn dificult. How does this Virtual CZ read the original patches? Preset 10 Vibraphone on this related Casio CZ sound pretty close: synthmania.com/2006/08/26/casio-cz-1000/ It is played some octaves higher on the demo though.
