Unable to find a thread dedicated to this subgenre of dark electronic music, so let me start one. It is Walpurgis night now, so how about I share a special hex-themed mixtape I compiled precisely 5 years ago

vandus, I listened to several albums by that Skaen you mentioned and I like it quite a lot. Reminds me of Lorn. I tried to get into witch house when it was first making splashes. It seemed like a really cool concept, but I found that most of it wasn't really connecting with me and it was hard to even pinpoint a consistent sound. Basically all I really got to identify whether something is witch house is how much it sounds like White Ring - IxC999. I remember after that initial attempt to get into it, I later discovered Balam Acab, and I liked See Birds and Wander/Wonder albums a lot, but I was skeptical whether it was actually witch house because it lacked that cursed sort of feeling, and instead just sounded like atmospheric electronic music. Like, what makes that stuff witch house and not Burial - Untrue? Not to say witch house is not a proper genre, just I'm not sure it was ever fully-realized. And I think that makes it really cool, like there will be a lot of unexplored territory if/when it ever makes a comeback. Or maybe it already has made a comeback and that territory has been explored? I need to look into it more.

I like your description that it should carry a cursed feel. Witch house always reminded me of like an arcane computer virus, like casting spells using computer code. I also need to look back into it a bit. Kind of forgot about this genre until this thread, it seemed to have peaked in the last decade and maybe fell away recently? Maybe there's some new stuff out there now though. Hoping someone can post some more recent additions to the genre, looking to scratch this itch again
Lorn is top tier for sure, I have writing playlists that are 90% his atmospheric stuff. Just want to also mention Forest Swords, really cool stuff. But now I'm off topic, these aren't witch house

At first watching this I was thinking it ripped off the Pagefire channel format of "How to make [genre]" videos, but then I saw it was from 9 years ago wow. Good video. I've been listening to a bit more witch house stuff today, and finding it pretty challenging I must admit but it is mostly different and interesting, so a good puzzling sort of friction. I am liking this song: Modern Witch - Your Life a Movie
