I recently picked up a secondhand CD copy of 'With Fear I kiss The Burning Darkness' by At The Gates for a measly £2.50 They are a band who had somehow passed me by which is a shame because they are pretty great and I dig this album! At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul is one of the first proper metal albums I was able to get into when I was young. I still listen to it a few times a year and I think it totally holds up, unlike a lot of other stuff I was into at the time. For some reason I never bothered listening to their other albums, but I think maybe I should.

This albums slays! And it's kinda weird but just like you I never was curious enought to listen to their other stuff. It was so influencial that it crossed the metal genre boundries and I can say that I was familiar with At The Gates style way before I've actually heard them. There was this polish band called Sunrise with somewhat legendary status here in Poland. Most of my friends called it metalcore back then, but as I found out later they were just copying At The Gates. There was a whole scene of bands that did the same xd. Only difference was the lyrics were about animal rights and the whole quality of music was of course lower (as it always is when you're a simple copycat). I find it really funny how similar the opening riff on this one is to the one on "Slaughter of the Soul". They had no fuckin' shame xd Getting back to the topic: I'm diggin' the disgusting "caveman shit" death metal right now. xD I must admit that my relation with death metal in general is complicated. For the most part I absolutely dislike all the progressive/technical subgenres and absolutely adore old-school and primitive ones. Some personal favourites: rotted-maggotstomp.bandcamp.com/album/dying-to-rot <3 gutless-maggotstomp.bandcamp.com/album/mass-extinctionmortalwound.bandcamp.com/album/forms-of-unreasoning-fear

tomasz.goblynListening to that Sunrise album and really digging it. I don't really know metalcore very well, but this doesn't sound like it to me. I didn't realize At the Gates were such a big influence on that genre. It definitely sounds like At the Gates worship, but that's good in my book, a style I'm happy to hear more of. I listened to all the At the Gates albums since that last post and was surprised at how consistently great they all are. Up until like the most recent one, the Nightmare of Being didn't really click with me and I turned it off after the first few tracks, but I might've just been tired from binging the rest of their album and need to give it another look. But yeah, I recommend doing a deep dive on their discography.

Yep, I totally need to catch up with the rest of At The Gates disco! But as always the pile of releases I need to check is... a fuckin' huge pile xd so it can take some time.
And I totally agree. On the musical side, Sunrise and the likes were just melodic death/At The Gates worship (enjoyable to this day). The term "metalcore" was used just because they were a bunch of guys from the hardcore scene who happened to play metal. For the last 30 years so many different bands were put into this "metalcore" bag that I don't even know if is it some strict rules genre. Probably not, but I'm not an expert. However, from what I hear from time to time (mostly in my sXe friends' speakers) melodic death is to this day a huge influence for many straight-edge metal(core) bands.

Hearing this artist for the first time, Siriondil, listening to both Tales of Ardian Lore albums. Very very good, strong Summoning influence but doing its own thing. siriondil.bandcamp.com/

Decided to revisit the Finnish band Battlelore after giving them a spin a year or so ago and waving it off as uninteresting symphonic crap.. I recently found out a guitarist for Horna played in this band for a period of time which was quite surprising when you compare the stark differences between both projects. However I'll say I've been been enjoying it much more this time around, guess I've just learned to appreciate cheesier stuff !

I've been enjoying Chastain as of late; I admit I've only recently found out about this band! I'm sharing here for those who were also left in the dark ☆.。.:・

Been a while since I listened to any metal at all, but today, when I've been resting and reflecting after my debut gig and ~2,5 weeks of training/listening only my set list of 6 selected songs like mad, I felt now I need some proper reset for my brain. Then I remembered this forgotten epic heavy metal gem which I put in the background while playing WoW and having a couple of beers after relaxing in sauna. \o/

Easily album of the year for me - and strong contender for an album of the decade.

I listen to this album a lot. It is exciting to me in a way that other metal is not, like it goes harder than everything else that has been made so far. But I don't listen to much metal so maybe there is a lot of other stuff like this out there.
