Greetings!
As I'm fairly new in the DS realm, I'd like to ask about Album Art creating, specifically how do most of you end up getting/creating your own. Do you draw/take photos by yourself, or take images from the internet and modify them?
Any tips/suggestions would be of great help!

This is a good thread, because I think every way is the right way. I mean, I like using photos I personally shot, think of Ruins and Escape covers.
Sometimes I found paintings that inspire me a lot, it happened recently with illustrations by Brueghel The Elder, Dulac, Vasyliev, Kittelsen as well. So why do not use them for future works? It's like paying a tribute to those painters and thank them for inspiration.
Last but not least: if you have a record label producing your record, they may need to render it in their own style, I mean giving your record a cool package. That's good, if they have good graphic stuff and -at the same time- let you give the last sentence about it.

Have you perhaps tried creating album art on a computer? What kind of programs would you use for this purpose? Thank you for the artist names, I'll be sure to check them out!

I use GimpShop which is very basic and free. Photoshop is for more detailed work. But I am not very good in computer art so I use computer mostly for editing and my hand drawn art is very minimal.

I use GIMP 2.0, basically the same of Photoshop but free. Many tutorials in lots of languages are available, also for free.

Photoshop for me, this is just one of the many things I've learned how to do this year since I started doing DIY music! Not that I have any great graphic design skills, but just having a background image, some text and a border was quite the challenge... EDIT - and I've used paintings that I found on Wikipedia BUT my music was inspired by the paintings. Would like to try doing my own stuff from scratch, my current idea is to make an image which resembles the title page of a book with a woodcut on it...

Drawing. Photocopy. Cut. Glue. Steal. Most by hand. Some computer. A lot of scissors, glue and pen.

I ended up using GIMP (with the help of a friend, it was my first time using such a program), and it turned out pretty nice

I use preview. I often download an image that I think would work for the album, and then add my name and such. I download free fonts. My favorite is Dearest, which I use for my album.

Does anyone know of a site containing free-to-use art in the DS aesthetics?

My recommendation is to surf around wikipedia for cool search terms that pique your DS-bone (for whatever aesthetic you're going for) and then google search with "labeled for reuse with modification" filter and continue to do that until you find an image that satisfies. I'm sure there are plenty of old paintings and photos that would make badass DS art waiting to get all stuck up on a tape layout J-card template with old english all caps plastered all over it. It's one of the things that draws me to dungeon synth, the art. I have more art for projects that I never composed music for than actual music lol.
I really admire the draw-it-yourself tactic, though. And don't tell us you "can't draw"--I think we all want to see your imagination's drawings.

Does anyone know of a site containing free-to-use art in the DS aesthetics? try this one, it features some good galleries: www.oldbookart.com/then, when I'm in search of inspiration from paintings, I use to type the "commons" tag into Google. Sometimes it works.
