On reddit, I am in charge of running the quarterly Top X votes each year and have done it for the past couple of years. You can find our votes here! This is a great way to keep up with new releases and not wait until the end of the year. This is the second year that we did a best of demos/EPs/splits/Etc thread. Next week we are having our real top 10 since the year is over. With all of that said, what did you like this year in terms of metal releases. Above is my personal favorites for the year but I also have a separate list for Demos/EPs/Splits/Etc as well as things I found randomly on Bandcamp.

r/metal's TOP 10 of 2016
Over at Reddit, we have quarterly votes for favorite album of the year and this is our last one for 2016. Vektor was an internet favorite along with Cthehthishsthsith. I am still linking up albums and putting them in the right order but the top 30 are ready for people to disagree with.

I am surprised that the new Alcest album ended up pretty high, I found it pretty boring and bland. My personal metal top 10 from 2016 is:
1. Eldamar - The Force of the Ancient Land 2. Coldworld - Autumn 3. Skuggsjá - A Piece For Mind & Mirror 4. Thy Worshiper - Klechdy 5. Sojourner - Empires of Ash 6. Harakiri For the Sky - III: Trauma 7. Druadan Forest - The Loremasters Time 8. Vindland - Hanter Savet 9. Wędrujący Wiatr - O Turniach, Jeziorach i Nocnych Szlakach 10. Skyforest - Unity
It is mostly atmospheric and post-black metal and some folkmetal.

I think people like the new Alcest either because they liked old alcest or they just do not like harsh black metal. That is certainly a lot of atmospheric black.

Good list, I don't know every band you named, but I see a lot of good ones. The Forteresse album was also very good.

In no particular order: 1. DsO - Synarchy 2. Nails - YWNBOOU (if that even counts as metal) 3. Inquisition - Bloodshed 4. Anicon - Exegeses 5. The True Werwolf - Demo IX 6. Blood Incantation - Starspawn 7. Candelabrum - Necrotelepathy 8. Orgy of Carrion - Obscured Ceremonies Under Hell Moon 9. Nyogthaeblisz - Apex Satanist 10. Wóddréa Mylenstede - Créda Beaducwealm
Not a great year for metal imo. I generally only listen to black metal (with a few exceptions, as you'll note) so maybe my perspective is somewhat limited. Eager to see what 2017 will hold
EDIT: Civilization Is the Tomb of Our Noble Gods is great

I'm going to guess that the ones you don't know are Steel Hammer, Ancient Empire, and Blazon Stone. They're all traditional heavy/speed/power metal bands. Steel Hammer is kickass heavy/speed with Udo-style vocals, Ancient Empire is like Iron Savior + Scanner, and Blazon Stone is the best kind of Running Wild-worship.

Awesome to see you mention death fortress, I've known the singer for a while, glad people are digging his stuff.
