Anyone using compact, portable setups for creating dungeon synth and related music? My plan is to design a setup that could be taken out in a backpack. I've always liked collecting sound and making field recordgins and now I'd like to record some instruments too while backpacking.
I already have a Yamaha 4-track cassette recorder that works with batteries too and I think I'm going to use that as my main recording device. At the moment I'm looking for a suitable synth. Any ideas?
I'm in the same boat. I'm making music in Logic as I record guitars too, but I was looking into some kind of musical sketchpad. You could go the groovebox route, Novation Circuit comes to mind for example. If you want a dedicated synth, what's usually suggested is the Korg Volca line, which are small, portable and can sound really amazing. One other option I'm considering is using my iPad Mini to make music. There's Garageband for iOS that can export directly to Logic, or there's a plethora of DAWs, grooveboxes, synths, samplers etc. You can combine those and then export everything to your DAW for further processing or record everything to tape if that's your thing. Hope I gave you some good tips
After writing the previous messages I found a cheap Volca FM. Gonna try that one. I also scored a simple midi keyboard which can be powered with batteries too.
Nice! Volcas are very good devices, I had a FM too, but I found I prefer to work strictly ITB, I don't have the space and the energy to manage analog gear anymore. Hope you have fun with it, though, let us know what you create with it
I’ve done a good bit of this just with a laptop and a two input audio interface. My biggest problem was wearing out the usb output on the back of my interfaces from so much jostling and resetting. Be aware of how much strain you’re putting on that point, they’re not really designed to be hauled around all that much. Or if you do, unplug everything before relocating. For portable synths I’m partial to casiotone, they’re not bad with batteries, especially if you get some rechargeables. Two inputs let’s you DI with a keyboard then point a microphone out into your wilderness for ambience. Fun way to play

This is an extremely cool idea and I'd love to try it.
I am really interested in the idea of creating a portable setup where I can do field recording and synth input at the same time. Does anybody have a good concept for a structural piece that can hold all the equipment, like a simple chassis that you can build out of some wood, or even repurposing something else? Maybe unnecessary.
