Hi, does anyone know (or can guess) which synthesizers and vocoders Mortiis used for creating the "Dark River" album? I think he used Korg M1 for some of the early Mortiis stuff, but the Dark River tracks have a certain vibe to them. And the vocoder recordings are quite intriguing too.

Mortiis pretty much exclusively used the Roland JV-30 up until I think the Stargate, where it sounds like it's present but also that he's using other instruments. I think around this time period he was expanding his arsenal, such as the vocoder and what sounds like a sequencer, but it definitely sounds like the JV-30 for the most part. I would guess even for the synthier bits he's just doing what little modulation the JV-30 is capable of. It's a really limited synth and not worth buying nowadays in my opinion. Even if you want the limitations, there are better options, such as the Roland Sound Canvas VA. If you just limit yourself to the SC-55 set in the Sound Canvas you basically have a JV-30 there, General Midi with a lot of the same sounds.
I have no clue as to what vocoder he could be using.

Hi, GREAT avatar you've got there, for one thing I'll look at my cd copy to see if it tells in the liner notes what he used, but if I remember correctly there isn't any info on it.

Thank you both! I really feel like there is no other album out there in this genre that reaches the same level of atmosphere and mystery as this one. Conceptually it feels like a universe of its own.
