Greetings Folks, If you're so inclined, take a moment to check out my first release as Old Moth Dreams, "The Light In The Abandoned House." The project is in a hazy area in between genres with bits of dungeon synth, drone, dark ambient, doom, and noise. I'm already tinkering away at my next few releases, should have another album's worth of material set to go around the New Year. Greetings! Just in time for the holidays, I've put together a rather dolorous arrangement of Carol Of The Bells. As the night slowly lengthens while we approach the Winter Solstice, may your holiday of choice be filled with as much gloom or cheer as you see fit. Downloads are free. oldmothdreams.bandcamp.com/track/carol-of-the-bells

I’ve completed another album, “In The Lee Of The Witch’s Tree,” four tales of things gruesome and unearthly, noisy dungeon doom with old school lo-fi industrial and highfalutin dark prog/neoclassical influences. We start with “The Day The Ten Thousand Ton Millipede Leveled Willoughby,” a plodding dungeon noise/doom kaiju-fancy about a titan arthropod having a day on, and all over, the town. Next we enter the realm of a deep backwoods hobgoblin with “Down By The Culvert Lurks A Pokeweed Imp.” “Midnight Meanderings Of A Lonesome Ghoul” wanders through more orthodox dark dungeon music territory. And it’s all brought to a close with the sludgey dungeon doom of ”The Cruel Curse Of The Carrion Crone.” Thanks to everyone for their support, it’s great that my weird auditory imaginings are finding receptive ears. oldmothdreams.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-lee-of-the-witchs-tree

I have a new anthology of the musical macabre available, three long-form tracks to add a little extra shuddering chill to winter’s edge: “Winter Ghost Tales,” honoring the tradition of telling tales of terror in the months of long, icy darkness. Style-wise, this is making a slight change in pace from previous offerings, it’s explicitly winter synth and more minimal and drone-oriented. oldmothdreams.bandcamp.com/album/winter-ghost-tales

A short (for me) EP to get the summer started, a slightly skewed foray into the realms of dino synth and primitive synth. A tale set in the Neolithic Age about the last functioning reconnaissance robot from a scout ship that arrived on the earth millions of years ago. Written in response to the Dungeon Shamble on the DungeonSynth subreddit. oldmothdreams.bandcamp.com/album/the-god-who-walks

I have listened to Hidden Aethyrs quite a few times now, and it is a bit challenging for me. It very much has that dissonant literal-dungeon vibe of Abandoned Places, which is a project I've always appreciated but never felt like I could fully connect with. But I suppose that's kind of the intention? It is like a hostile alien planet, a place not meant to be explored by mere mortals, but for the courageous there are strange captivating vistas to be beheld. Also just very wild interesting textures.
Each listen strikes me a bit differently, and kinda makes more sense each time. I think my favorite part is the sort of gothic triumphant culmination of "Anathema Of The Shadow Priests."

It very much has that dissonant literal-dungeon vibe of Abandoned Places, which is a project I've always appreciated but never felt like I could fully connect with. But I suppose that's kind of the intention? It's funny, the dissonance is both intentional and unintentional. For whatever reason my musical sense has developed in a way that moderate dissonance doesn't really sound "off" to me and just seems kind of natural, so I'll arrange things that are conventionally dissonant and not really notice anything unusual. But I do also throw some harsher discordance in for effect. It is like a hostile alien planet, a place not meant to be explored by mere mortals, but for the courageous there are strange captivating vistas to be beheld. I'm glad that comes across, it is a good bit of the atmosphere I'm shooting for. Not so much Tolkein-esque high fantasy, more dark, somewhat surreal, and nightmarish like Lovecraft's Dreamlands. And I very much like the tone of old pulp fantastic fiction where the lines between fantasy, sci-fi, and horror weren't quite as clearly set as they are now. Thanks very much for taking the time to listen, and thanks also for turning me on to Abandoned Places!

It seems like there is such a shift in fantasy pre and post Tolkien. Also very interesting how tolerance for dissonance differs. It is like food spiciness, for many people it can often just taste hot, but for those with tolerance it can have all sorts of complex subtleties, and of course it's not just a binary but differs all along the scale.

This is a tribute to the Halloween sound effect cassettes and CDs of the 90s and 00s. For the past few Halloweens I’ve made my own ambient and sound effect loops to serenade and terrify trick-or-treaters. The two pieces here are derived from those loops, considerably edited and expanded upon. The first leans toward dark ambient, the second toward drone. I hope you enjoy them and Happy Halloween! This is awesome, it captures not only the vibe & sound of Halloween tapes but the effect they have on you when you're 6 years old in the dark on Halloween night and you're coming up on the house with the best candy.

I always seem to be most productive in the Fall and have managed to put together another spooky album for this Halloween season. “Uneasy Waltzes For The Agitated Dead,” is in response to the October Dungeon Shamble, and features eight damaged waltzes of various sorts, arranged with the damaged bodies of the undead in mind. So put on your dancing shoes, loosen up those rigor mortis bound limbs, and have a nice lurch and scuffle! Old Moth Dreams - Uneasy Waltzes For The Agitated Dead
